I just started playing MCH and I dont get why this ability is only medium range.
I can understand why its cone shaped as thats how field of vision works and adds some thought to where you position yourself but to have to walk up to something to fire a gun feels very wrong.
Personally, I have no issues with it. Sure, a gun is meant to be long-range but a few MCH guns look more like shotguns than they do rifles.
Then again, due to limited song range I play BRD at close to medium range and I just play MCH the same way, even if they don't have a limited range party buff outside of tactician/refresh. That's probably why it doesn't bother me.
And I guess there's something satisfying about walking up to a huge group of enemies and shooting them all in the face at point blank.
Can't make it TOO easy, you gotta want it.
Eh, I'm usually not too far away from the enemy mobs for it to matter too much for me. Not much of a reason to stay far away from the group, unless there are a myriad of AOE markers being strewn about - especially since there are no cast times for anything and MCH are more mobile than ever before. But Grenado Shot will be missed...
If the mobs are too far away for Spread Shot, they might just be too far away in general practice. Yes, MCH is a "ranged" job, but every non-melee job is best off no farther than mid-range anyway, due to many factors including but not limited to the radius of friendly AoEs, the impossibility of getting out of a long range cone when at long range, and fairly common mechanics that call for the party to collapse in on itself quickly. Though these reasons don't typically apply to trash, it's not a bad idea to maintain a mid-range position as habit.
I have more issues with the animation, sound, and general tone of spread shot than it's inconvenience.
I'd rather have a conic blast like a shotgun or whatever.
Between Spread Shot and Grenado Shot, I wish we kept Grenado and got rid of Spread. 360 degree aoe from the target's position, no pre-positioning required.
Plus the sound wasn't as annoying as Spread Shot, and the animation was much cooler.
Honestly, a passive in the 40-50 range that turned Spread Shot into Grenade Shot would have resolved this instantly.
