One question: why? I mean, why play with the price of this thing, it has no purpose in the game anymore. Why not just delete it from the game alongside all those useless 1.0 items we can still see on the market board? That would free some memory.

Why can't you not just ignore it?
Maybe the devs have still some plans with those items, who know. At least Carbonized Matter I is still required for a quest.
And the players set the prices in the MB, not the devs.
Actually, in this case, the devs did change it.

it's just a nice step from the devs so you can get a little money back for your carbonized matter, since they made them useless with 4.0. so instead of throwing them away and get nothing you can sell them to an npc for a little compensation.
but however, let's complain that we get more than nothing...
Players invested time and resources collecting Carbonized Matter, and were given no warning at all that it was being rendered useless. I see the high sale prices for this stuff as being an apology of sorts for devaluing the items they'd gathered.
If anything, I'm confused as to why they're reducing the prices again. Why not leave them high, since there's no longer any way to obtain them anyway? Maybe there's some kind of bizarre money-making strategy that banks on carrying Carbonized Matter to servers where gil is stronger, or something? I dunno.
Can easily be changed, there's plenty of item you can gather, they're not lacking the choice.
That's why they temporaily increased the price to which you can sell it to NPC, and now they're putting back the original sell price instead of deleting it. That's what i don't understand. It should be like tomestone, after the trading window end they just purely delete it.
