Problem leveling up

When I complete a quest or a dungeon I see the experience points appear on the screen but they do not get applied to my character. I accidentally unequipped the characters in an effort to save space and then could not use them when next I logged in. I have tried to correct this but haven't been successful. Is it possible that because I have lost my thaumaturge no points are being accumulated? The narrative does speak about THM points and not BLM.
Both expansion packs have been installed and registered,
I am posting this at the suggestion of the Support Center.
I enjoy the game but if I cannot level up what is the point?
