Water Brand plus shield or Ivory Staff?

Serious Question. I've got King Mog and Ifrit in mind. I don't forsee getting my hands on either of their specific weapons.

Water Brand:

Water Magic Potency +22
Water Resistance +11

Ivory Staff:
Level 49
Damage 58
Delay 4.0
Magic Accuracy +10
Magic Crit rate +10

If you are talking just these fights I would also not dismiss a Lightning Brand. To be honest I have used them all and without a parser it is invisible to naked eye. I use brand because of double meld shield so the staff is not a good fit for me. Give them all a shot. Look for the balance in your gear between landing nukes or needing to up mag acc/mnd. Landing nukes consistantly over time is always better then crit nukes with misses.

Personally, I'm using a Lightning Brand - I managed to find one with a fairly nice +INT materia already rolled into it for a reasonable price, it's served me well. Since I wind up casting the Thunder line of spells more often than anything else post-1 2.0, the lightning magic potency struck me as a better idea than going for slightly more general +potency. I don't have a parser though, so all of my judgements on gear so far have been gut instincts, but I don't really see what would recommend the Water Brand over a Lightning Brand given that we don't have any water spells.

Hmm... no difference between the brands? This would suggest that for spells, the regular stats of a weapon are irrelevant and it is all in the bonus points. Can someone confirm this?

Vintage Cudgel would be better than Ivory staff with +22 Crit Rate and +8 Macc.

Lightning Brand would be better than Water Brand considering we have no water magic.

Electrum Scepter is my personal favourite with +8 Matk and +17 Macc.

All of these are potentially better than ifrit and mog weapons with good INT materia in them. Macc is important to your overall damage, so don't neglect it in favour of pure INT and Matk.

Take into consideration what materia you wish to put into the weapon.

1 hand THM weapons accept MP, Mag Acc, Heal Pot, and -enmity.

2 hand THM weapons accept Mag attack, Magic Crit, parry, and elemental attack.

Both accept INT, MND, PIE.

Shields only take life, life/mana, defense, and elemental resist.

THere basically like elemetnal stffs. Macro in the ones that are effective with chockers. Since switching gear on same job doesn't reset timers. Macro in the lighting brand and correct chocker to increase lightign damage on lightning speels, same combo for fire, and ice chocker for ice, using the higher mag attack with it. Since I can't seem to find an ICe based wand.

Electrum Scepter is probably the best overall for all situations, however.... Just join a Garuda burn pt before May 10th and get yourself a Van is the best suggestion I have for you.
