I thought it was originally to find yugiri and gosetsu and gather forces as one to liberate both nations at same time. But I just finished doma castle and they just liberate doma and head back to liberate ala mhigo separately? Why even head to orchard to begin with? I must of missed it.
My takeaway was that it wasn't to join forces so much, but to force the empire to spread themselves thin. Fighting on more than one front.
I think after Gyr Abania got its butt handed to it by Zenos, they needed to rebuild so they didn't have the manpower to really do much with their resistance. So we went to Doma/Othard to raise the resistance there so the empire would be more occupied and as Alphinaud I think said it: fight the battle on 2 fronts instead of just 1. Because the empire is scrambling to regain control of Doma, they would likely take people away from Gyr Abania (thus splitting what forces they may have) and the break would have given Gyr Abania a chance to recover so we could liberate them in earnest. So I think that's why we headed to Doma shortly after reaching Gyr Abania.
And Hein does bring some of his forces to help you out. Without his forces, we likely wouldn't have blasted the door down in that one cutscene because of the flying majiteks.
Risvertasashi is correct. Our confrontation with Zenos proved that we could not, under any circumstances, take him and the Empire's might on alone, so we decided to use our connections in Othard to stir up trouble there again, distracting and/or dividing Imperial attention enough to even the odds a bit.
