Yeah.. that's some weird design.
I mean I get it, it's so you don't cheese it immediately, but still, weird.
Not gonna say who or where because no spoilers, but I was in a fight, THOUGHT I was gonna win, then immediately realized nope I'm screwed. got blasted by 3 AoE's that were bad RNG then failed and booted from the server when I tried again >.>;;
in FFIX there were some unwinnable fights, however you had to survive for X amounts of minutes and couldn't die before the timer was up, it's kinda a trope

It should be noted that this wouldn't be the first time in FFXIV that you would have done an instance where you "win" but lose right after in the cutscene. Happened much earlier in the story in fact. Back when CC was useful funnily enough.
