I was just talking about this with someone!
Whether people understand the changes in Thancred throughout ARR (especially 3.2) depends a lot on how well they understand this moment.
SPOILERS THROUGH 3.4
He blames himself for not seeing sooner that the parade was going sideways (distracted by hitting on women as part of his blending in and reconnaissance), and thus blames himself at least partly for Warburton's death. He feels like his mislaid priorities robbed a little girl of her father, and the only thing that makes that any better is that he looks out for her himself.
Follow that up through him putting too much pressure on himself to fill the void left by Louisoix, how hard he is on himself when he can't help (assist Scion recruits, fight primals, prevent tempering), how he never asks for help ("I can't teleport? I guess I just live here now."), how he glosses over it all with sarcasm and aloofness, and that he wears himself down enough to let himself get possessed by the enemy and threaten everything he and Minfilia were out to do.
Aaand then she's killed.
Kind of understandable how he lost his ability to gloss over the negativity for a while there. If they didn't heal him up a bit between 3.2 and 3.4 so he could even be there to say goodbye, I don't imagine he'd ever stop being the guy who socked Emmanellain in the face for implying he was a great hero who accomplished everything he set out to do and knew nothing of having important decisions on his shoulders or dealing with the consequences of failure.
Bebo's phrasing can be a mite confusing (sorry, Bebo), but specifically, he's talking about the quest "As It Once Was", during the Dragonsong War arc of the 3.x Main Story Questline.
I'm holding out hope that Warburton is at least mentioned in Stormblood. After all, for Ul'dahn players in 1.0, he might've been the very first Ala Mhigan Resistance member you met! (He was a double agent acting as an Imperial spy but was still loyal to the Resistance, and the guy whose journal we deliver in 2.1.
Some sort of closure with his storyline and Corguevais' would tie-in with the supposed Niellefresne closure coming...
it also reminds me how sad I am little Ascilia won't be here to see us liberate her birthplace!
That sounds like an epic prequel story to our adventure. I always felt like the impact of that event was so massive, but could never understand why.
Krile, at the VERY beginning, mentions Minfillia being Ala Mhigan, and that Minny would be there at the forefront if she could be, implying that being Krile's reasoning for still being with the Scions.
I don't recall Warburton being mentioned at all, but I hope we get some sort of questline about it, even if we're just paying respects.
Thancred mentioned Warburton at the end of the story, hoping that his part in liberating Ala Mhigo would go some way towards making up for his past mistake.
