I'm just starting to play around with Materia, but I've found that Grade 1 is for gear level 1 and up, while grade 2 is for gear level 31 and up, and that grade 3 and 4 are both for level 41 and up.
While I know that the stats might make a difference, I just was wondering why we can't move grade II to 21 and up, keep grade 3 at 31+ and have grade 4 stay at level 41+.
It's just a thought, :)

Yup it's plain stupid. While a tier II materia only works ar too high gear for it (31-40) the tier III is completely useless since it shares the same lv as the tier IV (41+)
It should be tier II 21+ and tier III 31+ and tier IV 41+... -

Even without PLing i got my CNJ to lvl 50 with Rank 10 gear tops... Granted, as a healer I dont need to do physical damage or tank many hits (except when im Curaga II bombing).
The real problem lies in the ease in which you can get to 50 with or without PL, with or without gear. Where as in FFXI, once you got your sub jobs and hit the dunes, you were NOT getting an invite unless your gear was up to date. For the simple fact that FFXI lvling was a difficult grind, and dieing ment you lost exp, and without the proper gear you could'nt do much other than die.

But it's annoying that the level 2 grade stuff isn't for level 20 gear. For people that do just leves a few times a week (we're evil casuals), it can take a while to get from 21-30.
