Protect Spell Variation
* The cross class skills being reworked in Stormblood may make this idea moot, but give it a thought or two
The idea is to give each of the healers their own variant of Protect so that not only does it remove the need for to be it exclusive as a cross class ability, it also goes in line with other abilities that are similar-yet-the-same already seen in the roles.
The below all give the exact same effect/results, the only difference is the name & spell animation.
WHM : Esuna / Raise / Cure
SCH : Leeches / Resurrection / Physick
AST : Exalted Detriment / Ascend / Benefic
Here are the ideas of what the variants could be. (All are in line with FF spells).
WHM : Protect
SCH : Shell
AST : Reflect
*Any new healer job, possibly Wall or Barrier?
Any thoughts or even further ideas are welcome.

i don't want to cast "Reflect" just to get a "Protect"
i'd rather AST just get a REAL "Reflect" spell to go along with a Time Mage's kit
sort of like Warden's Paean, a defensive, pre-preemptive skill for an incoming spell
but having SCH and probably AST get an actual Shell, reducing magic damage (since SCH/AST give PIE buffs, they seem to be the ones to group as "similar"), and keep WHM with Protect, make it physical, would give WHM an edge....
removing cross-class skills in Stormblood, nobody gets Protection but a WHM.....
i dunno if that's healthy for an MMO to have, but, it'd be pretty hot to see shell AND protect like a real Final Fantasy game
but, again, who knows if that's even all that great to just have so many 30minute buffs...

Well I get what your saying, but I think it's not bad to want the same effect that Protects gives, but just to allow variants of it instead. They wouldn't stack or anything, if you have Protect active but you then cast Shell for example, the timer just resets and the buff sign would just be replaced with the latter that's all, or vis versa.
True they are only 30min buffs, but there is no Shell or Reflect as a role spell in this game and that's pretty sad considering they are in nearly every FF, and it would definitely be pretty cool to have both available regardless of the effect they end up giving.

i know what you meant, i just wanted more.... "muchiness" in the spells meaning
if we're not going to have a REAL "Reflect", or a REAL "Shell", implemented into this game due to balance/other ideas they want to add, then i wouldn't disagree with what you're asking for
and i'd second this
because i do understand what you meant by the same spell effects/different names
and give flavor in Protect like the rest
i just
would prefer having those spell names being used for the real spells from the game's history

We already used to have Proshell being exclusive to WHM via CNJ trait, and they decided to remove that and give it to everyone with cross-class.
They're not going to repeat that mistake again.

I can see a buff to the ability as a trait in the WHM quest line. no need to replace the skill entirely.

Protect: Reduces physical Damage taken by 10% and Magical by 5%
Shell: Reduces Magical Damage taken by 10% and Magical by 5%
Reflect: Reduces Damage Taken by 5% but reflects 0.5% of damage received to attacker.
All can Be stacked but Shells/Protect 5% will be increased to 10% if paired together.
