Playing FFXIV with a paid VPN?

I'm currently in Japan, with a NA account. I have no issues playing on my ISP server here in Japan wirelessly. I also have a VPN through said ISP for Hulu, and I believe it's an IP address based in California. Problem is, I can't ever play any games on any platform online. It never really connects to a server, PS4 or PC.I was actually able to download the patch files through the VPN though.

I have very little experience with VPN's, so what's being blocked? Do I need to port forward, change DNS settings, or anything else? I think my DNS is linked to google's DNS. I never really figured out why I couldn't play any games online with this VPN.

I could obviously let my wife use the VPN for hulu wirelessly, and then connect to my main ISP IP address, but then I'll be in the kitchen :/
