Could be new and don't know any better, just going for kills and that team is easier to get to, farming tomes/light and just waiting for the game to end quickly, or just plain don't care. I don't think there's any logic to it, probably the opposite if anything.
People can't even push to the big ice, pretty sure the majority don't notice the points, or think that it doesn't matter
A couple reasons spring to mind:
1) Hive Mentality. Most people just follow each other around and so if one yolo-loving-member decides to pick a fight, most likely a few others will follow. Then other alliances will see the that's where their team is heading and follow like lemmings.
2) Kills. There might be a point when you know that your team just isn't capable of winning the match - either you're trailing too far behind or simply lacking the skill to keep up. Might as well start picking off the easiest to kill team and get a few achievement points. That 'Hand of Mercy' title isn't going to earn itself.
3) Most people are new and don't understand strategy. All they know is it's PVP and think the strategy is to kill other people. Points? Ice? Wins? Losses? No clue on those things.
What I tend to see is the lead team, knowing they're in the lead, will back off a bit and play defensively, and/or assess the flow of battle, leaving 2nd and 3rd place to vie for points. Other times, one team refuses to back off the other (usually 2nd and 3rd, or 1st and 3rd, leaving 2nd free to creep ahead). And as mentioned, sometimes, people just don't notice the score.
There are those times too that people/teams who know each other clash, and it becomes a war of attrition and/or a battle for respect, lol.
Normally is to maintain or try to secure second win, lower points usually make easy kills. There's some rules that most teams ignore;
The main focus is to get ice and normally most teams don't camp BIG instead they all group on to smaller ones. Rule of thumb usually works one alliance goes and gets small ( splitting into 2 groups ) while staying close to big. The other two alliances camp out big Ice in the mean time. Unfortunately most ignore objective and rather then camp big just want to fight it out. I seen most groups fail because their is no team work. So the other alternative is to secure second and get easy kills. Normally fewer points means less co op, for the majority. However I've been in groups were I just start sending orders and we have come from dead last to first once people get explanation on madness strategy that focuses on objectives rather than KO ing others. It all varies on who is leading, or willing to speak up on how victory can be achieved.
