Can The Free Trial Be A Gift?

I want to give a code for the trial to a friend of mine who plays a wide variety of games to see if they are interested in this game. I can't use my own ID to do obtain a second code for the trial.

Do they have to download the trial themselves or can the code for the trial be gifted to my friend?

They'll have to download it to play it. :) Just have them go to http://www.finalfantasyxiv.com/ then select the correct country and sign up for the trial.
