Question on MSQ characters mortality

Spoilers obviously

Is our favorite seeker Y'shtola Rhul dying? I've putried thought into it and I believe it can be assumed from the events in a particular cave with a kindly old witch that her trip in the stream may be slowly killing her. Can we assume despite her blindness that her crystal eyes (?) use aether of a kind to provide vision further tapping into her life energy?

Maybe the crystal ball used to help locate Thancred will go to her?

I think its more that her efforts to compensate for her loss of sight is inherently risky and puts a lot of stress on her body. I see it kind of like smoking or drinking too much. Your not necessarily going to drop dead suddenly but your at much greater risk of health issues.

I will seriously be sad if we lose Y'shtola. She has been my favorite Scion since the beginning. I absolutely LOVE the dynamic between she and Matoya--probably one of my top highlights from Heavensward story.

The Mushroomery is by far my favorite composition as well. So beautiful, but with sadness lingering all throughout the melody. A foreshadowing of things to come, perhaps? I seriously hope Stormblood revisits this relationship. I actually have a theory that Matoya is going to sacrifice herself to save Y'shtola when the time comes. =(

The Mushroomery though is actually a music track from an old FF game, the very first in fact - it's real title is simply Matoya's Cave from FFI, and composed by Nobuo Uematsu. But I agree it's a beautiful track (when I first entered the Hinterlands and checked the map and saw Matoya's Cave listed as a location on it I admit I cheered then). ;)

As for Y'shtola, given that we've already seen

three Sharlayan Archons meet their ends already (Louisoix, Moenbrdya and Papalymo (although the jury is still out on that last one), and not including Minfilia (who isn't an Archon nor Sharlayan), I wouldn't be surprised if Y'shtola meets a similar fate, as it seems that as Y'shtola, Thancred, Yda and Papalymo have been part of the story since the very beginning of version 1.0, it's possible this is deliberate, to clear the slate for a new cast of main characters to take over.

Or maybe I'm just reading too much into this.

But yes, if I remember correctly it was explained that she returend blind from the life stream, yet uses her aether (aka: her life energy) to replace her sight - if I havent dreamt this part it was even explained that shes not actually seeing the world as we do bute more the aether in it (I always picture it as some sort of heat-vision). This is ofc draining her life force itself, so ultimatly her life maybe shorter than it would be without this.
(...seeing how the warning came from Matoya, a woman so old that you wonder if she dug that cave shes living in herself a thousand years ago, I try not to worry to much about it and hope that the effect wont kill her within the next 2 years but rather in the next 20...)

It's not going to kill Y'shtola tomorrow, or after breakfast, but using aethersense to replace vision is shortening her life expectancy. By how much, well... nobody's sure.

I can definitely see that. Yda is being set up as a big plot driver after the last story patch. Thancred could end up getting killed by Yda out of spite/rage? Also, what of Alphinaud and Alisaie? I have to admit, as much time spent with Alphinaud through HW, it would be so odd to not have him around.

I think Shtola will be one of the last ones standing, but lawd I will miss her if she goes.

I worry for Thancred the most. His personality and actions especially around the end of 2.0 makes him seem like he hangs around death more than anyone. And after the ordeal with Minfilia, I see a loose canon thing building up.

It really depends on the need of the writers.

They can just throw in a scene where she collapses after overusing her "sight" and needs to rest. Or they might just never mention the eyesight ever again.
