Give mentors more rewards to abuse the system? That's smart
You want to weed out some of the bad apple mentors? Remove any and all rewards for being a mentor. Sure there will be some that will keep the crown as a status symbol but with no rewards to gain from it you'll likely see an increase of real mentors that just simply enjoy helping people.
I'm a mentor and I think this, I also don't have the mentor roulette unlocked simply because there is still content I need to get cleared to unlock it. I became a mentor because I enjoy helping people not for the rewards that are given, up until I darted seeing the mentor posts I didn't even know there was rewards because there wasn't any rewards for being a mentor in ff XI
I believe there was a huuuuge thread about this before. The OP there wanted a grading system based on DPS/amount healed/etc. Did not go over well. Wasn't for mentors though but it still has a grading system.
Mentors can be rude. Sprouts can be rude. Randoms can be rude. I don't do it for the rewards. I do it because I want to help. I know that's not everyone's goal, but there you have it. The grading system can be easily manipulated by someone who didn't like you. Removing the rewards is fine, but there should also be a system when you report a mentor to have someone thoroughly examine the evidence against the mentor and take action against the accuser if they were doing it out of spite. For instance, I asked a tank in Amdapor Keep HM to put a buff on every once in a while because I noticed he hadn't used any for the few minutes I was watching him. He went off on me and called me a bunch of names, and if he had the power to I'm sure he would have reported me just to take away my mentor status. I don't want to give these types of people that power.
Don't know mechanics? Ask me. I will defend you if we wipe on a boss and you say "Sorry guys, I'm new to this dungeon." Simple as that.
Uh..you shouldn't have meritocracy system for mentors. It encourages the wrong mindset, you shouldn't be nice BECAUSE the system forces you to, you help players because you understand that everyone had to start somewhere, even yourself and that helping people will have a ripple effect. If this was implemented then I'd rather not be a mentor, even though I've been really nice and helpful (I craft for free with my own food & I explain mechanics if wipe occurs,etc), because the trolls you've seen so far in the forums would give you a poor rating whether you're good or not.
Also it is very tiring, there were times where I've saved the parties and play well but I don't receive commendation yes it gets demoralising but so long as it does not have a permanent impact I'm fine, grading system WOULD have a permanent effect. I don't need commendations or a grading system to determine whether I'm a good(not talking about skillwise) player.
Speaking of Ubers did you know there are people who gave drivers a bad rating because the customers refused to pay? Point is it defeats the purpose should you be at the mercy of a system that is base on the integrity of players I would only agree to this if 100% of the FF players are righteous, morally right people that can do no wrong in their judgement then Ok by all means.
Since people who use Uber can be rated by Uber drivers as well and eventually loose their ability to use Uber does that mean Mentors can rate sprouts?
What would be the consequence of that for the sprouts? hmmmmm

Seems like a better idea just removing the mentoring stuff. It's being abused for personal gain and not helping new players as intended.
