Hey all,

Got some Chocobo questions.

a FC helps, or an apartment. The coloring is done by feeding your stabled chocobo certain fruits like marmook pear, ogamarro berries.
To rank up past 10 it needs to be max exp and fed a Thavnarian Onion(this works even in the open world)
for every rank above 10 you need another Thavnarian Onion, the max rank is 20
Cant command the chocobo, the tooltips have been wrong since 2.0. Its sad honestly.

Ah right.

But, in order to color or rank it up?
Am I required to have some for of housing?

About the tooltip misinformation: hm, just a detail, it can happen. As long as i know it isnt possible, it's fine.

Yes. I highly recommend using ffxivchocobo.com to get the colour you'd like. You just need to use a Chocobo Stable (via FC housing, personal housing or apartment). The items it's telling you to use can by obtained via gardening or, if you're lazy like me, on the market board. It can get pricey.

I haven't for the life of me figured out how I can use his abilities manually.
Open up the companion menu and select the skills tab. Here you click on the skills you wish you obtain. They can only be selected in order (left to right). I highly suggest you focus on one role: DPS/TANK/HEAL depending on what you play most. You also obtain a new 'outfit' for the chocobo per each role once you have levelled all the skills in that role.

To get more points to level your skills up, you need to level your chocobo up. Check the challenge log for quicker ways!

Increasing Choco rank above 10, must i have a FC for this?
No. You can get an apartment and use the stable there. But joining an FC is cheaper for you if they have a house already.

To take it past 10 you'll need a thavnairian onion. You can get one in 2 quests (check xivdb.com) or via the Market Board. You'll need 1 thavnairian onion per level past 10. You'll need to fill the XP bar to use an onion again.

Is barding purely aesthetics?

Yes. It's about making your chocobo look FABULOUS!

I understand you can have more than 1 racing chocobo, where can I get more?

This place will give you all the information you'll need for chocobo racing and breeding. However the idea with racing is that it's a seperate chocobo to your companion chobo and that once you reach max level with it, you retire it and breed it to make a stronger chocobo (like FF7).

I'm just a poor guy atm, with 150k gil at lvl 42.

As far as the barding goes, o mighty my how fabulous she already looks in her Eerie barding!

For all types of housing you must be at least level 50 and have reached the rank of 2nd lieutanant in one of the Grand Companies.
An apartment will cost you a mere 500k gil.
A personal house will cost a couple of million for the cheapest ones. Assuming you can find one for sale, which is usually not the case.
If you are part of a Free Company that owns a house you can get a private room in that house for 300k gil, but you do not need that to use the stables.

So apartments are always available then?

yes apartments are always available - either in the main district or subdivision in each ward.

Not always. There are a limited number of them too - but far more of them than houses, and SE have said that they can fairly easily add more apartments if needed, but they haven't done that yet.
On most servers you should be able to find some free apartments. The exception are overcrowded servers like Balmung.
