I've heard "roe-GAY-den" and "RO-gah-den"
Lorewise its Roo-gah-deen.
This is going by the correct pronounciation as shown in the roegadyn dictionary
I'll forever alternate between Roe (As in rope) or Rah-gah-dahn. Until I hear it spoken verbally thus shattering my brain.
I pronounce it Galka
>.>
Like Moose I follow the JP pronunciation, as it also follows the in-lore phonetics given for the roegadyn lexicon (OE: An 'ooh' sound such as the 'ue' in 'blue'.)
Rue/Roo-ga-dihn/deen.
As Koji has told us, the Roegadyn tongue is based on Old High German - or German in general. I take the "oe" in "Roegadyn" to actually be representative of the vowel œ (œthel), which in modern German would be written as an "o" with an umlaut: ö.
Rœgadyn, or Rögadyn. Just like Hydaelyn should by rights be Hydælyn, but the æsc apparently wasn't supported by 1.0's system, or maybe was deemed too alienating, I dunno.
I'd describe œ or ö to an English-speaker as a sort of cross between an "o" and an "e" which sounds a little bit like a "u". Make an "o" shape with your lips as if you're about to go "ooooh", but then try to make an "e" sound with your teeth and tongue. You should get kind of an "eeuugh" sound.
Reugh-gah-diyn.
Koji's provided pronunciation of "Roo-gah-deen" is just an approximation for us English-speakers who aren't accustomed to making that sound.
(The œthel used to have common use in English as well, but generally has shifted to an "e" sound and, in American English, is even written with an "e" as well.)
- fœderal -> federal
- fœtal -> fetal
- diarrhœa -> diarrhea
- œuvre -> oeuvre
- phœnix -> phoenix
Similarly for the æsc:
- encyclopædia -> encyclopaedia -> encyclopedia
- æther -> ether
- æsthetic -> aesthetic -> esthetic (sometimes)
