SE to churn out a FF title/year?!

I don't know even where to begin to understand this logic.

Past 2 FF titles have damaged the brand equity and to make more money let's make more FF games at a faster rate!!!

Yes because we all know XIII and XIV would be much greater games with even less content.

I wonder what this means to the resources available for XIV's development?

Assassin's Creed was always interesting in my opinion and certainly had no "lack of content", still, they released those games way faster than SE did with FF.
And it's not just FFXIII, it's even waaaay worse with Versus XIII x-x
But I think that's okay, I'd rather have them take longer and make a beautiful game instead of doing it fast and going down to a graphics quality games have which use the Unreal Engine.

I agree with FFXIV, but as far as I know, XIII was a success and many people are eagerly awaiting the second part.

i played every ff and most of the spinoffs and XIII is character and storywise one of my favorits

So far from what I've seen I wouldn't say that XIII-2 is somehow "inferior" to XIII in quality.

Developing a major title in 2 years is by no means even that impressive (if its not an MMO). SE has taken way too long to get games out this gen, and so have Japanese devs as a whole. Even three years is starting to be a drag in this day and age, and you can hardly see it in the content or quality of the end product.

As long as the games don't start being rehashes of the same old systems (like FFVII-IX or AC) then I can not see the problem. Are you seriously saying that XIII-2 is coming "too soon" after XIII, or that Versus by 2013 will be "too soon" after XIII-2?

Nvm the whole OP then. If they make every FF game a waterslide with minimum interaction from here on out then I suppose doing one every year won't be too much of a challenge.

Personally I think the sales numbers were greatly affected by the fact that it was a FF-title. One which appears every so often and the previous ones were such great games. Also XIII was marketed like no FF title before it. People didn't buy XIII knowing what kind of game it was going to be like.

While pointing at the sales is definitely a good measure I think the sales of XIII-2 will be a much more telling of what people like instead of pointing at the great junction that happened with XIII.

Every single person I know personally that has played FF games in the past (about 17) absolutely hated XIII but bought it because they say ; -quote "I thought it was an FF game".

An empty world that barely has you interacting with anything beyond scarce sidequests with uncomprehensible objectives. A battle system in which pressing attack and heal every 10 seconds while figuring out mind-numbingly simple gimmicks to beat "bosses" is the pinnacle of it's gameplay. Pressing X while watching cutscenes that have no interaction whatsoever. Going from place X to Y as the only means of game progression.

While I fully understand your personal annoyment of JRPGs in general I can't help but wonder why you've played them in the 1st place? I mean especially the old ones are really really long but something compelled you to go through them anyway?

Honestly, this smells like spin-offs (which can be good!) We have a FFX HD coming our way, more than likely we will be seeing a FFXII HD as well possibly FFX-2 HD as well.

Once those turn HD it will be easier for them to port sequels to those series since the coding for the system is done, and you have the character models (its why Assassin's Creed was able to make so many games a year, all the textures and character models were finished basically after the 2nd; same goes with all those other games that release yearly)

Also not to put false hopes in people's hearts but...once they remake 6/7/8/9 HD (if any of them actually come D: ) they will be able to make sequels or spin-offs since the character models/textures would be complete. But it seems like an interesting thing to make claim.

Side Note: XIII-2 comes out Jan. 31, 2012 (not Feb 22 like the article claims), which is strange since the article is recent...

While I was a teenager, my tastes were different and the FF series' story (made for my demographic) was compelling. Naturally my tastes have changed since then, just like yours, so the FF series and especially it's story (still made for the same demographic) most likely wouldn't have the same effect on you than it did back then.

Hopefully needless to say, the now-pre/teens enjoy playing FFXIII for its story, while the grumpy old men that played the previous entries are not as compelled by it yet still cling to the franchise anyway.

I also find it telling that you did not (or, could not!) refute any of the points I made, which have nothing to do with anyone's subjective opinion but straight-up facts. The worlds really were empty aside from the NPC's that only existed in the cities, the sidequests rarely gave you even remote hints as to what the hell it is you should actually do, the battles had you pressing X every 10 seconds while watching animations which were sometimes even a minute+ long. The gimmicks were simple by any standard so calling it strategic would also be the overstatement of the decade. The story did not progress anywhere until you went to the one exact place or talked to the one exact NPC and the story was the aspect that kept the game going.

The old ones are really really long because you were doing mundane crap half the time like talking to each NPC in town when all you wanted to do was to keep the story going.

Now you will probably start listing "all the sidestuff" that you "could do" in these "games", all of which could have existed without all the filler that didn't serve any purpose.

If the majority didn't like the game, it wasn't a success. So I don't think anyone is pretending, as much of a fan of the series I am, I'm a gamer first and the gameplay in that game was terrible, I could literally just mash attack and win every battle up until chapter 11 pretty much aside from maybe one or two boss battles. The story was average at best, characters hardly memorable besides a few of the main cast and there wasn't much at all to do until the very end of the game. I mean throughout most of the game you're in tutorials and you're almost always seperated. The one thing they got right was the world and graphics. So in my opinion if they couldn't get it right within all the development time it took for 13 I'm kind of skeptical, but I wouldn't mind a yearly release since they finally have their engine ready & tweaked.
