New player catch up..

I have played on and off for a while and have gotten most of the MSQ done up to probably 3.3 or so. I had stopped playing for a while before heavensward released and hopped back in to try out new content and had to finished all of the MSQ to even unlock the new content. (100 or so MSQ to get through to unlock the new stuff).

Is this still the way it is? or have they changed some things to where you can get to the new stuff without having to go through the outdated/obsolete dungeons and primal kills. I got a friend to play for the first time (hit level 10 last night) and Im just curious how much he will have to do to get caught up and be able to play with my main. I know SE loves there stories and want everyone to experience it but that is a lot to have to do to just play with your friends. Now they will have to go through all the Heavensward stuff to unlock the new stuff for Stormblood expansion as well?

Yes he has to play through the entire MSQ to do endgame stuff.
No he has to do absolutely nothing but reach level 10 to play with friends. That's what level sync is for. From level 10 onwards, you can do every single guildhest, dungeon and trial with him. There is absolutely no reason to not play together before he reaches lvl 60 content.

Like what Atoli said, gotta play catch up. They nerfed a lot of the primals and dungeons so he should be to 60 in no time. You both can still play together.

Once he completes "Before the Dawn" he can go into HW. You can help him with main story dungeons and primals, run palace of the dead together.

I helped many of my low level friends hit 60 just by playing casually. Good luck and have fun!

Also they seem to have increased quest xp rewards. While 3 years ago my main character had to do every single side quest and still needed to grind 2 levels before Castrum Meridianum, the alt I started leveling recently is doing just fine with only running main story questions ignoring most side quests. her level seems to even be higher than required for most missions.

If you do the leveling roulette daily then you won't need many, if any, sidequests for leveling.
If you stick only to the MSQ (including the mandatory dungeons) you will not get nearly enough XP.

He can play together with you at any time. As Atoli mentioned, that's exactly what the level sync function exists for, to ensure that players of different levels can play together on a (relatively) equal basis. So there's no reason at all for him to rush through the actual game. In fact, playing together with him as he explores it is a fantastic way for you to spice up your own game with the variety of content he'll be reaching.

Don't worry, it goes fast. He'll be stuck at the end with you endlessly repeating the same thing over and over again soon enough.

About Stormblood, I think Yoshida all but outright said in an interview that Stormblood will be made completely separate so you don't have to go through all of its Main Scenario for Stormblood. However, you'd still have to get to Level 60, of course, so I assume you'd still have to go through all of 3.0. Anyway, we don't know for sure yet.
