It was used in FFXI, can't have it, sorry!
...
Yes it would be a very nice feature to add in, especially since unlike XI, XIV has decidedly a lot more room for terms and the like, though the old "see it then tab it" trick seems to work sometimes but yeah a direct /translate command would be a great addition.
Wait... with /translate you put a string and the system translates it in your language?
That's awesome!
Nope that was invented during the dreamcast era. Now we can't just use nice things from the past when it's totally valid to re-invent the wheel with less features! When auto translate os not useful it makes up for it by being hilarious at all times. The question is: "Do you need it?"
Wait... isn't it simply this? (finally found it after hours of search!)

- f - French
Example_______ /translate "Melon Pie" ef
______________Translates the item "Melon Pie" from English to French.
If that's so, the Auto-translation we actually have now automatically translates what we want to say in the other languages, so to make the question "Do you need it?" you simply write Do and press TAB, then select "Do you need it?".
To be honest it's kinda tedious, having to write Do and then searching for it manually. I wonder if there will be a system in order to filter the Space in the Auto-translation dictionary too...
By that I mean, writing "Do you" to filter all the results with TAB.
I usually just go to the item in my inventory or in the wards and it pops up in translate.
The tab translate is good, it just needs some tweaking to be more precise.
Rather than asking for a feature poorly made and old, why not go straight for something efficient?
If we are talking about items : either shift+click or drag & drop into the chatlog
If we are talking about a quest : shift+click from the quest journal
Well basically like in any modern MMORPG where linking items, quests, achievements, NPC names, location+name of an area, can be simply done without the need of typing a command.
Save /translate only for things you do not own.
