Horrible game?

Watched a few youtube videos on FFXIV. Thought okay, I have a friend playing lets check it out.

I purchase and download the game and used the referral code for my friend. I attempt to join his server and observer its greyed out. I contact support by phone and they tell me that the servers too full and that I couldn't make a character on that server unless I payed MORE money ontop of the monthly cost and the basic game cost for a server transfer?

I thought I'd be able to just download the game and play it with my friend. Guess now I'll have to look into a refund since the game doesnt support me playing with friends. No cross server play either?

When requesting to speak with a manager I was refused and the customer service rep said there was nothing else he could do for me.

I'm disappointed that your friend didn't warn you beforehand that his server was full. :( Balmung and Gilgamesh have been "locked" for a long time, except for brief periods right after maintenance.

But Sargatanas is a nice place! :) Maybe you can convince your friend to transfer over here to play with you instead?

He has a large community of online friends and offline friends on his server. Sargatanas I've seen a total of two to three players running around in the "major city" I was in apparently.

Cross server play like WoW fixes issues like this. Friend code referrals allowing players to create a character on their server fixes issues like this. Good customer service explaining how their system doesn't have any of this in place yet prevents pissed off customers like myself.

It's an overpopulated server. You may want to play with your friend, sure, but people already on the server take priority with the server space - if the flood gates were to open for free then it'd cause even more sever overcrowding and the people who currently play there may be subject to longer queues.

I think the way they block players from joining crowded servers is not the right way to do things, but that one element of the game only really negatively affects a very small percentage of people and does not make the whole game horrible. The sluggish combat system is bad enough to almost make the game not good for me.

Your friend should have warned you if they were on a server that rarely opens.

It's a bit silly to claim that they don't want you to play with friends just because they limit new characters on popular worlds to let the people who have established characters on those worlds /actually/ play. If it's Balmung or Gilgamesh you're going to have to try to make a character right after a maintenance ends. If it's like, any of the other worlds just wait until it's not peak time. I had to and I got over it just fine.

Wait so gameplay sucks because SE has locked the server to make it playable for others?

Although I agree customer service on here needs improving on this occasion they are right, as they did everything they could to warn you that you can't create a character there. Also the main page before even creating a character tells you what servers are available.

Also if you started in Gridania or Uldah then those two citys are quiet as people tend to all group up in limsa, due to the market board being nearer the Aetheryte

Well, to be fair, we just had a patch on Tuesday, and a lot of people are off in other places doing the new content. People do still hang out in starter cities, but like Masekase said, Limsa is livelier because the bell and board are two steps from the aetheryte. Sargatanas isn't really a low pop server, it's kinda middle-of-the-road. I'm just saddened that your friend knew you were coming and never bothered to tell you to wait until right after maintenance for a shot at getting in? :( Unless he's still fairly new himself, idk...

But if there's anything else you want to know that you feel isn't being adequately explained by SE, by all means, come back and ask us anything you want! :D

You probably wouldn't enjoy this game anyways if that your outlook it from the start. Also kind of funny that you think the game sucks and want a refund just cause you can't play on the server you want.

You might be better off, really. From my observations, Balmung and Gilgamesh attract the worst members of the FFXIV community for some reason. Middle-ground is where it's at!
