When character display mode view is turned on in the item dyeing panel, the L1/R1 cycle function is disabled. Users have to manually move the selector back to the dye row, select a color, then return back to the camera view button again to re-enable.
The L1/R1 buttons should remain active at all times.
It's due to a conflict between whether L1 means to switch colors or L1 means zoom in/out in your display view. If it didn't disable the color switching, it would scroll uncontrollably through all of them every time you tried to zoom (which already happens in a lot of other windows with L1/R1 tab switching).
The only workaround is to turn the display mode on just long enough to zoom and position your character, then turn it off when you want to switch colors (though you can switch shades within a color range either way). It's a bit awkward, but at least it works.
