Would player created content work in FFXIV?

Reading a post on content got me thinking about a feature in another mmo - Neverwinter.
It's a ftp mmo - with unfortunately a reputation for mercenary pricing

But, and nothing to do with pricing, it does (or did the last time I looked) have the Foundry Feature.

This enables players to create their own content, literally building up their own mini-dungeons and sometimes really good story lines. These can have you role playing certain characters (still with your own class's skills), going through short stories.

Some Foundry writers have developed series content, where you progress your character's story in Parts 1, 2, 3 etc of Foundry creations. Sometimes these can be solo or 2 player and it has to be said, some of the work gone into these player creations are excellent, real labors of love.

After running each one you can give it a review score, and if you really liked it a small in game currency donation. That's down to the person and is entirely optional.

So, the question: Do you think that kind of player created content would work in FFXIV?

Day one: 90% of dungeon designs are phallic. I don't trust you guys I'm sorry :P

On a serious note, this game is very story and lore driven and having this kind of content is difficult to implement when the devs are intent on telling their own story rather than having a player create their own story, I think it's a good idea, but not suitable for this particular MMO.

The Foundry also had another function. For us roleplayers in that game, we'd use the Foundry to build private instances of our own to RP in. Mansions, moonlit forests, huge libraries, fortresses, and any number of other buildings. It was pretty awesome. I myself made a mansion for my character.

Probably not, except as something that is expressly a gimmick, albeit it one that people can take as seriously and ambitiously as they like. I could see something like this working for a Sharlayan-themed 4.0, with some "this is your story" overtones, creating your own world inside your mind, a book, or some item of shared memories, or even just as, quite literally a practice tool or toy used by their students. It can also double as a massive improvement, quite simply, to the idea of player housing (now more broadly player environments).

Would I want to see the developer time go into that rather than mainstay additions or, better yet imo, revisions? No.
Would I want to see our community interests fixate on their forges rather than on ideas that, if actually hammered out, could possibly provide useful insights or ideas for the mainstay game's improvement and/or advancement? No.

Probably not. You have to remember that Neverwinter is D&D based. Most people who play D&D or Pathfinder and such are heavy role-players. They're used to creating back stories, custom scenarios, etc, because the game they play requires it.

While FF has a decent RP community, creating custom content is different, and I feel the addition of such a feature would largely go unused or would be full of half hearted creations

Rightfully so, if the local Balmungian quicksand is any indication. Though I'd be less worried about phallic designs than my character being dropped naked in a cage...with a Kraken or sth in the background.

That said - I do think player created content has great potential! The custom maps in WC3 often felt more lively than the regular game and we all know what happened to the MOBA genre. I'm pretty sure the players could do PvP at least better than the developer. But realistically, I doubt SE would even have the resources to offer such a thing, let alone police it.

In FFXI they had the moblin maze mongers where you built your own dungeon then the moblins had an underground cavern where they built your design, it wasn't very good because it's a 13 year old game and the system was very limited, but my friend and I thought it would be good if they brought that over but better, they could use a system similar to housing to place walls and decorations, give us a large space, maybe 3-4 "floors", give us some themed decorations from existing dungeons like temple, mansion, swamp, cave, fortress, Allagan etc. Give us a list of enemies to place and set their behaviour like aggressive, links etc. Then once you're done you could let people play your dungeon.

I know you mean well, and I understand your point... but no-one should ever use a system similar to XIV housing, ever, it's just full of problems. On that note, it does bring up a good point: How quickly would this feature make the servers explode?

It's a good idea - but it kind of immediately reminded me of Little Big Planet. :p

I'm not sure it would work with FFXIV and something so heavily lore based.
