How many of us are fickle when it comes to our character's appearance? Given the demand of the player base to be able to re-roll our appearance when the new graphic engine is implemented, it appears the majority of us.
But one thing I haven't heard considered yet: when you create your character for the first time and transport into your brave new world, if you don't like how your character actually looks in-game, it is very easy to simply log-out, delete, and adjust until you get the exact character model you intended.
You've lost nothing.
But what about if you were to perform this same make-over but on your level 50 character? What if you had invested hundreds of hours worth of play time, and now upon remodelling your character to what you think you want, you enter a re-visualized world only to find some quirk about your character that didn't translate as you had hoped, and are now stuck with that forever.
It would be devestating.
You've developed an attachment to your character quantified and justified by the hours you've spent building it, and now it just looks ... off. And you can't delete and adjust, because to delete would be to erase months of play time.
This is a risk every one of us will be taking. Even if you think you want your character to be the same race and gender, it will still look different. And what if you find out you don't actually like that look?
What would you do?
To protect against this dooming fate, I propose that upon the release of this new graphic engine, and after creating a re-modelled character, players are put into a "holding zone" where they can run around in a mocked-up envrionment, play with emotes, fight training dummies, run, walk, jump, sit, craft "nothings"; all just to understand and confirm how their character will look in the "real" environment. Once they are happy, they can leave the instance, confirming their look and living out the rest of their days in Ezora comfortably.

This would, in fact, be pretty awesome. (I know I wasn't happy with my inability to move my character around, see the way different lighting effects made him look, and so on, but then again my current character was made as a stopgap to eventually be turned into a male Miqo'te in the first place, so...)
It's important to get character creation right and make a good first impression on a new player, as well - the character creation screen is going to be a new player's first interaction with the game, and the more it feels 'right' and lets the player feel confident about their choices, the better an outlook they'll have starting the game.
Edit: HAH, I -thought- I'd read about this somewhere, but I second-guessed myself and went 'no that was probably wishful thinking or a suggestion you read and really liked' and didn't want to look like an idiot. Well, yay, I'm happy to be wrong here. :D -

My only regret was not rolling dunesfolk. I don't even know how it happened, either. I was dunesfolk in beta and loved it, and toyed around with all the options again at launch. Then I blacked out(probably alcohol related), and woke up to my new character. I don't remember finalizing it at all. I've grown attached to my plainsfolk lala, but when my kids see me they say I look like an old lady because of my white hair and hair style I guess.

The flip side to the coin is that when you start the game, you have hopes, expectations and goals about your character. I, for one, rolled the biggest lalafell because I planned on being a tank like in XI and figured it'd look better... however, I hated playing GLA and decided to go mage this time around.
Except now I'm huge for no reason and I look kinda doofy doing certain things. Even me on my chocobo looks a little like I'm just shy of his weight limit. I'd love the opportunity to fix that.
While a mistake now would be a mistake forever, I don't think many will make as many mistakes as they'll be fixing.
