Better late than...
Hi all, veteran mmo player here, total FFXIV newb. Played trial a year ago & didn't take the plunge, but the recent Steam sale sucked me in. Now playing Arcanist (love summoner types) & only up to lvl 11 in 1st couple areas.
Fairly fun so far, in a quirky, retro-anime kinda way, heh. Also love dogs/wolves so have my eye on Fenrir. Now realistically, how many classes, levels, 1000s of hours will I need to get him lol? 1,000,000 MGP sounds like a LOT, whatever TF that is!
Ok, so what's the best approach - just quest/hunt/fate around all over the place until I hit 20 then do Choco Comp quest (which company would be best for MGP/Fenrir, if it make any diff...?). I'm mostly a solo PvEr & time-limited 'power-gamer' in mmos (I try anyway :). Any/all advice appreciated guys.

You can access the Golden Saucer at lvl 15. Look up "Challenge Logs" and unlock them as soon as possible; you have no idea how much it helps. Also, do the quest to get a racing chocobo, because many of the Challenge Logs require it.
Even the biggest Logs, the best way to get MGP, give you 10,000 MGP per week at most, and the whole I would say isn't giving you more than 50-75,000 altogether per week. It will take you months to get to 1,000,000.

More importantly, you should know that the chocobo you can't get till 20 is actually totally separate from the racing chocobos (which I suspect you can get at 15).
You will, of course, still need to get the company chocobo at 20+ in order to actually use Fenrir after you acquire him for 1M MGP, though.

The best way to grind out MPG is Triple Triad. Farming Indolent Imperial is very efficient source of MPG see this thread for details.

Thanks muchly guys. Did I also mention I'm a mmasochist lol? OK, let the journey of a 1000 steps begin (as I trip over & fall flat on my face just while turning in the right direction ;).

So to answer your questions fairly specifically...
MGP is the "special" currency they use at(and only at) the Manderville Golden Saucer. At/around level 15 a quest in Ul'Dah will open up access to the saucer. At the same point, a quest in Limsa will unlock your "Challenge Log". Do both those quests. At the saucer you'll have sub-quests to unlock chocobo racing, triple triad, and verminion - do all these too. At the saucer there are small minigames you can play to earn endless MGP in small doses, there are GATES(saucer version of fates) that can earn you thousands per pop(one spawns every 30 mins - 15 and 45 past the hour), there are your bigger minigames(triad, racing, verminion), and there are the lottos. Mini-Cactpot is up to 3 daily scratch off tickets worth potentially 10k each, Jumbo Cactpot is a weekly drawing with a tiny chance to win over a million MGP in one go(and smaller consolation prizes). Try all the games once or twice to get a feel for them. The challenge log will have bonus objectives you can meet for bonus MGP that can be repeated once per week each(along with bonuses for a lot of other parts of the game - VERY worth it). Then decide how much effort you want to put in. If you decide to basically "move in" to the saucer, you can grind out 1 mil in a few weeks of constant gates and games(or you can get lucky and win this weekends jumbo and get there in 3 mins work). Most people get there in 3 or 4 months of regular but casual trips to the saucer. If you're taking the "slow" approach: do as many challenge logs as you can, do your mini cactpots as often as you can, enter all tournaments(even if you dont really play, the participation prizes are worth the 30 seconds registering takes), do the gates that you enjoy, and youll have the money built up soon enough.
And dont worry about your company, it wont matter on this topic.

And you can turn in triple triad cards you already have for points. You can end up getting quite a few cards when you run instances over again. I usually save them up and turn them in several at a time. And welcome to the game. :)

Tx again for the tips guys, let the OCD games begin! :)

If you like wolves, there's also the Direwolf mount you can get. Not as big or impressive as Fenrir, but still pretty cool and a lot easier to get.
To get the Direwolf, you'd need to reach level 41 in the Main Scenario and then unlock the Ixali beast tribe quests.
You'll need at least one crafting class and all the gathering classes unlocked, and the crafting class at least slightly leveled up (though not by a whole lot, and you'll level it a lot more while building up rep here).
Then do a bunch of daily crafting quests to build up your reputation with the Ixal. Once your rep reaches "Allied" (rank 7), you can buy a Direwolf mount from them.

Well welcome to the game! It's to bad you just missed the event with bonus mpg, but I have almost made a mil mpg achievement in a couple months, there were a lot of days where I did nothing but mini cackpot, because I got burnt out, but I played triple triad, did the events that take place every 15 min.'s you get at least 2000 if you finish it, except 'where the wind blows' it's just plain out luck, mini cackpot daily if your not familiar with what to look for you try to get 1, 2, & 3 in a row to get 10k mpg, if your going to play the machines the best ones are in the hallway of minion square/chocobo square there's out on a limb & a mining one not sure of the name off hand they get you quite a bit because of being able to double down, once you get the rhythm down its pretty easy.
Once you get to the golden saucer anyways. I personally wasn't interested in that mount, especially with the price tag I mean sure if I make it to a mil & got everything I want already then I'll probably buy it. But anyhow good luck, hope this helps.
