[Spoilers] The Future of Dragoons & the Inquisition?

I'm really curious as to what the future holds for them. As of 3.2, we know that Ishgard is moving towards a concrete peace towards Dravania in the near future, possibly as early as 3.3 when Nidhogg is dealt with.

For dragoons, they are a specialist anti-wyrm unit. But would such a dedicated unit still be needed post 3.x with the peace being established and the need for anti-wyrm forces diminishing? Would they be molded into a new branch of the military that deals with general air defense (what with Garlemald parking a Battleship right next door in Azys La)?

There's also the issue with the Dragoon Job quests. At the end of the Lvl 60 quest, Heustienne leaves Ishgard to combat dragons in Dravania. Problem is that a peace is pretty much being established and after Nidhogg is beaten there really won't be many hostile dragons left as I suspect those of Nidhogg's horde who survive and aren't taken prisoner will likely have fled to areas way beyond Ishgard's borders, out of reach of any Ishgardian. My belief is that any that remain will likely be forced to accept the peace whether they like it or not. So what is she to do? And how will the job quests progress from here? Other than taking the route of learning how to fight alongside dravanians instead of against them, I really don't see how the job quest can progress.

Then there's the inquisition. Once an institution meant to hunt for heretics, as any1 who has played the new Hildibrand quests can tell you, it seems to be in a bit of a bind now with Ishgard questioning the need for an inquisition now that amends are being made with the Dravanians. What role would such an organisation play in the future?

Even if/when Nidhogg is finally dealt with, there will still be some of his brood left, trying to finish what he started. And they'll be around for a long time.

But it is most likely Dragoons will be retrained slightly to be the elite of the elite Knights of Ishgard, maybe even to focus on Primal thralls or such.


The inquisition...well, I'm sure we'll see something about what happens to them with Hildibrand. And get a bunch of Spanish inquisition jokes.

I think it's likely that the Dragoons will continue to be a relevant force. They've perfected some advanced fighting techniques that our character proves can be useful in combat against all manner of foes with some adjustment, and Eorzea even without the Dragonsong War is still a place of constant conflict. As Ala Mhigo used to be known for its force of Monks, Ishgard's Dragoons will continue to be the iconic force that drives its foes away, or at least that's what I would assume.

The Inquisition... I would like to hope it could be disbanded, myself. The need for a force like that would be greatly diminished without heretics to 'purge'. That really depends on how Ishgard's story unfolds from here, though. It's possible, though hopefully unlikely, that the Dragonsong War will persist if the wrong people manage to keep power after the events of Heavensward.

The way how the Job quest is kind of weird. The main reason why Heustienne left was because she was turned into a "heretic" agaisnt her will, so she and her family would be on danger if she even tryes to come back. But the funny thing is that this is no longer the case, with everything that happened on Ishgard, she can freely came back whatever she wants, it even would not matter if she was turned agaisnt her will or not LOL.

As PArcher said, even with Nidhogg defeated, there'll be some dragons that still hate Ishgard (and the 5 races) so there'll still be a need for Dragoons. If anything, there'll be a downsize of Dragoon since it seems they train children who's orphaned due to dragons ravaging their village and with peace looming over I doubt such occurrences will happen much, if at all once Nidhogg is no more.

Although I do like the prospect of Dragoons riding on dragons; their jump ability will certainly make mounting/dismounting a flying dragon an easy task.

As for the Inquisition? I'd say it'll be disbanded since their main job was to find heretics.

Dragoon's will be around for a while, Hostile dragons will be around for generations and its simply stupid for a state to throw trained skilled soldiers away rather then retool them for new era's.

The Inquisition I think has more of a future then in just heretic hunting, They seem adapt at getting secrets out of people.
The alliance needs security and that's exactly what the Halonic Inquisition has tried to do for Ishgard for centuries moreso then most bodies currently in the alliance. With all the current dangers I can see them shifting scope and rooting out spies and rooting out information. Which they have had a lot of training for...

I think the Inquisition's fate is going to be dealt with by the Hildebrand questline. It's unlikely to be very dignified.

I hope not. Words cannot express how much I loathe Hildibrand - especially now that he and his lackeys end up attached to the resolution of some of the game's more serious lore.

Dragoons will always have a function as an elite special forces group at the very least so even if full fledged peace is made between man and dragon the Dragoon will still have a purpose.

The Inquisition on the other hand, I honestly see us having to put them down like rabid dogs along with the fanatics we faced in 3.1. They had no actual purpose other than subjugating the common folk and striking fear into the noblemen to begin with. So they are not only unnecessary but also a complete hazard to Ishguard's Prosperity at this point.

I could honestly see Aymeric allying with Sid and using the Dark Knights to hunt down rogue inquisitors as things become more stable.

Eh, I'm not sure I'd be interested in this game if Ishgard emerges from the war adhering to modern day ideals of what is 'good' and 'righteous'. I prefer more morally grey settings - and that is what FFXIV seems to be presenting itself as. With that in mind there's no real reason for the Inquisition to be disbanded. They were already used in 3.1 to deal with that unhinged priest and apparently even used torture in an attempt to get information. This raises a few interesting scenarios - since it highlights that Aymeric isn't above using torture to get information for the perceived 'greater good'. It also keeps some of Ishgard's grittier, more questionable aspects intact for those of us who are a fan of such things. Furthermore it puts forward an intriguing dilemma next time the WoL clashes with an enemy who resorts to torture themselves. Sure, they can criticise the act itself - but when their own allies are using the same methods it makes for some interesting and satisfying hypocrisy.
