I kind of find it disappointing that our minions were given the ability to fight one another, but not our Retainers.
If possible, in the future, could our retainers be given the chance to compete against one another in a Gold Saucer Coliseum made special for them? It would give us more to do with our retainers instead of them just handling inventory, selling items/gear, etc...
Instead of special gear, they should be able to completely change form with the flick of a few buttons. And since changing classes is already too encumbersome for regular retainers, you should be able to choose their roles before the battles begin.
They could be categorized into types of fighters, that have different abilities that are either superior, or inferior to, other retainers. Or neither.
Oh and wouldn't it be cool if you could put them in the arena and like a real time strategy game, send them after enemy offensive and defensive battlements?
And since we need to strip every ounce of a retainer's identity to make your idea happen while properly balanced, we might as well do this whole thing with minions instead....
On second though, nevermind. I believe I just described Lords of Verminion.

Or maybe they could make the coliseum like that of Dragon Quest's monster coliseum where you select a retainer, place a bet on them and have them fight in single or teamed combat with other retainers in a turn-based style battle system and have the option to participate in tournaments or selected or random one on one or party versus battles that give you the option of having your retainers fight a certain amount of rounds to determine the winner. :)
I never really got a Pokémon vibe from retainers personally. While betting on Coliseum fights and grooming your own hand-picked warrior is one thing, I can't really say that retainers would ever come to mind when it comes to employing such an idea.
This seems like a dark thing, isn't it bad enough we dress them in ridiculous outfits but now in addition to this they have to compete in the hunger games. Also my retainer is Grimalikin, she's a witch assassin, she'll win with her Dance of death

The same can be said for minions, I never expected we would ever have them fight one another to win extra MGP and stuff. But look at us now. XD In my opinion, it wold give retainers more of a use for their job classes than them just being my little creations who carry and sell all my extra stuff. To me, it would give retainers the chance to shine and show that they aren't just a bunch of people that just do all the menial tasks that we, the adventures, could do as well, but show they are adventurers as well. ^^

Not really hunger games if you look at those bundles of cute little minions your sending out to beat eachother up. >.> This is just something to give the retainers something to do and to shine as their own individuals than sort through our stuff and stand like statues in front of our houses.
I've never actually played that mini-game truth be told, but I got the impression that it was incredibly light-hearted and fluffy. Retainers are simply meant to be paid servants that help us by taking care of the menial tasks that we don't have time to be doing, like standing around in the markets trying to get people to buy our junk. It just seems like an insane step forward for their line of employment *laughs*
Anyways, just to be clear, I'm not necessarily against the idea since I'm not exactly worried about a Retainer's Rights Movement happening or anything, it just strikes me as something that would make more sense employing a totally different line of NPCs, similar to how you use different chocobo for racing. Though in the end, so long as they get around to employing the idea, I'm not going to fuss over how they choose to do so.
Hmmm, I don't really like the idea of using random NPCs. I mean, it would be nice, but I just want to see our retainers do more than the tasks we give them all the time is all. This kind of thing would just be for fun, like with the minions. :D
Ive said this before but... TBH i would rather they add "Battle Square" to Gold Saucer, where we control our own character and go head to head against various combat NPC challenges, much like FFVII.
