SMN pets' damage confusion

Anyone have any idea how this works?

Ifrit: Burning Strike = 120 potency
+ auto-attacks at ??? potency

Garuda: Wind Blade = 100 potency

So why is it that Garuda hits harder than Ifrit, if by only a little bit? Ifrit should way out-dps Garuda. What gives?

I have also seen this today, Garuda was out DPS'ing Ifrit by a large margin on standard attacks in some cases 50 to 100 dps per hit higher

Because their potencys are based on different stats.
Ruda is Matk Ifrit is physical (around 70% of your Mind).

not sure if mind is right but they definitly dont share the same base stat. ^^

As for OP, I have tested and Ifrit does more damage than Garuda over time - even when I contagion my dots with raging/DWT etc. I haven't paid attention to specific hits, just overall damage. I can test later with specific hits if you like.

ifrit's burning strike plus auto attack is about even if not slightly more damage than garuda's wind blade.
Haven't tested this since 2.4 or so but If you count ifrit's attacks you will see his autoattacks are faster that his burning strike. I think it was about every 6 burning strikes he would do 7 autos (maybe double that, it's been to long). That's how he ends up surpassing garuda over time assuming minimum movement so he gets the uptime to get those extra autos

Your weapon has 2 damage stats, Physical Damage and Magical Damage. Only the more relevant stat is displayed in the tooltip (Casters see Magic, melee see Physical, etc), but both stats are present. In the case of casters, the Physical Damage stat is always ~70% of the Magic Damage stat. For example, a Gordian Grimoire has 105 Magic Damage and 76 Physical Damage.

Garuda's attacks are calculated with the Magic Damage stat, and Ifrit's are calculated with the Physical Damage stat. Although its attacks were changed to Spells instead of Weaponskills, they are still calculated with the Physical Damage stat. The result is that Ifrit's Burning Strike (120) + auto attack (60) end up at 126 potency total when scaled for the 70%. This is why Ifrit's combined attacks only appear a little stronger than Garuda's.

I tested htis a bit yesterday and Shinryu I think is correct.

Ifrit will do 120 potency at 500 damage vs Garuda's 100 potency at 700 damage (averages) - this works out to Garuda's potency = 1.2x that of Ifrit. That said, Ifrit's auto-attack does 250 average, so per 3s Ifrit did 750 vs Garuda's 700. I found, without fail, that every time Ifrit will outDPS Garuda over time.

I also found that these differences in potency effectiveness do not translate to Enkindle.

In general Ifrit will do 20-40 more DPS due to auto-attack than Garuda on stationary or single targets, though this does not factor in the use of Contagion or Radiant Shield. Contagion's benefits are obvious, especially if used on dots applied during Trance, but Radiant can be fairly insane in moments where melee are sharing a damage-hit, tanks are being hit in rapid succession, or large AOE's are going out (note that Radiant's damage is based off the shielded player's STR stat, so it's great for tanks and melee sharing damage and near-worthless on casters).

This is true for as long as there isn't a lot of knockback, boss movement, or target switching. Ifrit moves like a drunken sloth in a pit of molasses, and any time it has to reposition or run to a new target it is losing DPS. Typically if there are lots of targets spaced apart, frequent target changing, a boss that runs around a lot, or any fight with lots of boss turning and cleaving, then Garuda is easily your best option, but if it's a single target that doesn't move around much or a group of adds all gathered in a single location then Ifrit might serve you better. Either way, they are both close enough to each other in effect that unless the fight specifically caters to one over the other then either will serve you just as well, assuming you know how to use them decently, though Radiant Shield's benefit is oft dependent on the fight and enemy attack speed whereas Contagion is good as a standard.

And incidentally, due to the potency change for pets Ifrit and Garuda will both do about equivalent AoE damage with thier Slash and Crush moves, despite Ifrit's being higher potency. This may actually be part of the reason for the adjustment.

It can also be noted though that Ifrit DOES have a stronger Enkindle if its dot is allowed to tick fully down, as Enkindle's potency is calculated off the player's stats as a player ability rather than a pet-specific one (it does NOT gain benefit from Raging Strikes of Dreadwyrm Trance though).
