This would be nice, I don't see why repairing isn't subject to the same limitation even though there is a DoH requirement for that too.

Actually, it used to be. And they subsequently removed it not too terribly long ago to facilitate the ability to repair your own equipment while duty-bound.

Cloud Strife and his mates don't need a blacksmith to put the balls in their holes. We shouldn't need them in FFXIV as well.

I agree 100%. As long as you've got the appropriate class at the appropriate level, there should be no reason to force you to switch.
