What is the general opinion of 2 caster composition?

So I'm in a new static trying to see what I can fill in as, there's a healer spot but I'm tried of healing (was main healer since 2.0)

My main's spot, MCH is taken by a Bard, and there's a BLM;( so there's only two spots for another dps.

My options are Ninja or Summoner. I know Ninja brings more utility (even made a topic about choosing Ninja or Monk, Monk kind of bothered me a little bit, not my style.) but I find Summoner much more enjoyable. Is a 2 caster composition generally bad?

First thing to know is there will be a penalty in 3.2 for LB building if you do not have tank tank melee melee ranged ranged healer healer. The "melee melee ranged ranged" thing, unfortunately for groups who've never gotten away from the whole BRD SMN BLM comp, will make running this comp detrimental to LB, and subsequently, possibly detrimental to mechanics which involve LB.

That aside, it's not recommended because you are trading a melee for a caster. The caster role is a weird one these days ... SMN is AoE king, which is fantastic, but not so spectacular in raids, and even with a BRD it's lacking single target output compared to the melee. BLM can compete in single target but it's not going to "contribute" as much as a melee will, specifically the DRG or NIN you are repping to use it, because they will put out amazing numbers and then buff the party. So, you'll end up with less raid DPS if you go caster caster; it's not terrible, especially if you're not doing cutting edge, but definitely a downgrade, and if you ever fight an enrage or hard DPS check, comp is pretty important in FFXIV. My group used to run BLM SMN until FCoB and there were some pluses to it, mainly an extreme freedom of mechanics and every situation with multi-DoTs and AoEing would get demolished.

However, at the end of the day, that stuff isn't that important, single target raid DPS and contribution is kinda king so beware of that if you pursue this comp. That and the LB disadvantage you will incur.

Didn't they decide to drop that LB idea though after people complained how much this would punish existing statics? Something like it's on hold until they rework it to better fit in?
Or was that all just wishful thinking and I can't tell what's real anymore? xD

In general, any content is beatable with pretty much any kind of setup if everyone excels in their class. An amazing caster will easily out-dps a mediocre melee dps and will therefore be more useful to meet dmg checks. If you play SMN a lot better than NIN, go SMN. I noticed over the last few years that content goes a lot smoother when you let people play the class they prefer and enjoy the most, because they simply play better that way :)
But if there isn't much difference in your ability with both classes, keep Sleigh's answer in mind - SMN isn't all that great at single-target dps, so for most raid and ex trial fights, NIN would be the better choice.

Think LB thing is only on same class and not ranged or melee?

I have ever since been in statics without any casters and only in current raid we have a BLM with DRG/MNK/BRD/BLM setup (used to have DRG/MNK/BRD/BRD and DRG/DRG/MNK/BRD as late progressions 2.1-2.5).

My opinion on your "problem" is play the class you prefer and in some cases maybe switch (eg A2S 2 mages are simply OP). Also if you don't mind either just look which roles you get nice relyable people for? I used to swap SCH/WAR until I got set down by my raidlead to "I want you stay SCH" and I also still offer DRK/WHM/AST for my static if we need replacements. My raidlead knows I also have some DPS at 60 but will only use them if really needed for content i can be "carried" through :p

They changed it back to slower LB for double stacking jobs, but it will be roles again for 3.2 so 3 ranged (Brd, blm and smn) will slow LB. They temporarily changed it back so as to not affect teams already composed during an active raid season.

Yeah they tried setting it so that it's roles that matter with ranged basically being casters+physical dps, so stuff like 3 healers, 3 tanks, 3 melee or 3 ranged would slow it down but it was punishing current groups so reverted until 3.2 - let's see how it will be though.

I know its not what you want to hear but just to play to fit a role doesnt make you happy, i know what im talking about ._.
Switched main classes since ARR Launch just because no one wants to play healer and then i played one, because its needed, but you will often have this moments you wish you choose this one who is the most fun to play for you.

There's nothing especially wrong with 2x casters, but there will be when 3.2 hits.

lucky for me SCH is my main people like my healstyle and it is kind of a "mandatory" for raids :D

But yes never let yourself be pressed in a form just for raid. I enjoy both tanks and heals, while SCH is just my class I play with pure joy and right from the heart and (almost) never get sick of it. I wouldn't offer classes as main that I cannot enjoy (eg any DPS for me).
I loved to heal T8 pre DF for static once on WHM (first time using it after leveling to 50 and was fun but also a lot of "eeeeeh where art thou skill and whats yer use?") and now train Thordan in PF 90% on it because it is a challenge and I would try it for raids if really needed as main, but SCH is my love ^^

The way I understood it is that they changed it back because there was a massive amount of complaints from raiders who use 2 caster/1 ranged composition, and that they are looking into adjusting it because of this. When they re-implement it, it will be different in some way when compared to what they were going to push, likely by putting MCH/BRD into a separate category from SMN/BLM. If they didn't, then they wouldn't be changing anything compared to the version that they had to remove due to player backlash, and would simply receive the same backlash again, but on a larger scale because they told everyone that it was being adjusted when they removed it.....
