MAGIC and bloodlines

So another small question. So everyone could use magic correct(except garleans) now I know in a few quest they have sed that magic is hereditary for example that one girl in the conjurer guild that was able to heal bc she got it from her mom. So is everyone able to use magic and some are more skilled with it bc of their families?( I should really start reading the dialogue for all quest lol)

Sylphie and her mother were both unusually strong in healing magic. On the other hand the 5 guildmasters of the Thaumagatures are also very powerful, but their youngest sixth brother is not strong enough for the art.

So basically a lot of people can use magic, and certain families are probably stronger in it then others, but isn't a gaurenteed thing.

It is implied to be very rare to be unable to use magic in the THM questline. The five eorzean races (and presumably the Au Ra and the beast tribes) all have "aetheric levels". For the lalafell Dualblade mentioned his are so low that it would risk his life to cast any spell. The predominance of magic in Eorzea has been noted several times.

While bloodlines may play a role, I think that in general most people are capable of magic. Talent and skill, however, are another matter.

Oh OK so what is yshtola's reason as we all know she does use the astro ability. She in turn is a conjurer is she able to use it bc some in her blood line is a astro I mean she did come from where they are originated

Not quite. While some people are incapable of using magic due to their low aetheric levels, those who are capable can learn from as many schools of magic as they may desire. Meaning if you can use any magic, you can learn Arcamina, Astromancy, Thaumaturgy, and/or Conjury.

Strictly speaking I don't think Y'shtola is simply a conjurer. Our understanding and training of the use of conjury comes from the Gridanian methods. Y'shtola is Shalayan trained. The disciplines likely have quite a few differences as well as similarities. Its also worth noting that she isn't simply an Astrologian since she doesn't use divination cards or a star globe.

Generally you don't want to try and clearly define NPC classes as exactly the same as the ones we have access to. Ishgardian knights use swords and shields but they aren't trained in the same style of fighting that Gladiators, who are from Ul'dah, are and they certainly aren't Paladin trained as that skillset comes from the Sultansworn.

As Belhi just mentioned, Y'sthola and her sister are also Sharalyan as well, meaning they were probably educated in aetheric manipulation and other magical studies since childhood, despite being Sunseekers. It seems that magical ability has two requirements - the aetheric 'tolerance' of the body to handle the manipulation of aether into spells (especially those spells that use the body's own aether such as Thaumaturgy), and the actual knowledge to do so (this is why a lot of npcs make use of spells that simply are not available to use - they have actual knowledge of them and how to cast them - Y'shtola and Flow is an example of this). Classes/Jobs are more a gameplay means of handling how these spells are handled by the player, but NPCs seem to consistently ignore class/Job restrictions.

It should also be noted that this goes beyond actual magical disciplines like Conjury into basic classless spells that are used for more mundane tasks, specifically Teleportation and Return. There was a past official thread that stated that not everyone in Eorzea is actually capable of using teleportation magic for this reason - their bodies' aetheric tolerance levels are just too dangerously low to allow it (which is why other modes of transport are still commonly used), and even then, even those who can use teleport often can't use it very often for the same reason (they might be able to use teleport, but their aetheric tolerance only permits a few portings before they have to rest).

Of course, the player's character has both the Echo and Hydaelyn's Blessing of Light meaning our aetheric tolerance is through the roof and can withstand constant teleportation and have easy access to casting powerful magic that would kill those with lesser tolerance if they tried to use it themselves.

Since skills and spells are more or less gamenplay, lore way to determine the pre job skills from the guilds is when they say "Time to teach you <insert skill/spell here>" that the fade to black is you being taught and practicing the skill.

But on the flip side, our Job Skills were created and mastered by long dead predicesors in the arts. So when we learn Job Skills the Job Crystal its self passes the skill directly to our minds be it via echo or a similar form of telepathy.

So as far as NPCs go, they have skills they have learned that we haven't. Plain as that. Being from Sharlyon, who is as powerful in magic as.Garlemauld is technology, small wonder she knows spells we don't.
