Melding future gear VS the tank meta

Regarding the tank meta in previous mentioned posts i'm just wondering what other tanks are going and how melding our gear is going to affect our stats. Should we meld for vit? str? With the way the meta is right now are we going to see people who meld for vit be made fun of for not going str?

I'm excited for being able to meld gear but I just can't help but think that it's going to create more stigma among the tanking community which boils down to:

Should I be a more tanky tank for going all +V vit materia? Or more DPS with all V str materia?

These will be the threads we'll be seeing in the future.

I think we will only be able to meld secondary stats on non-crafted gear, but maybe I got it wrong :confused:

I'm a little confused myself (probably should of clarified before making this post D: lol) but I think it's main but you can't pentameld main stats? I'll have to re-read I think.

Materia changes coming in 3.2
Primary stat melding will no longer be possible to overmeld
High level crafted gear from 3.2 onward will be much stronger
Melding possible on tomestone gear and raid drops
Base stats on crafted gear will be much stronger since materia melding is being nerfed

You can meld main stats just can't overmeld more than what the slots are requiring.

Before we can even talk about whether we'll meld str or vit or what have you we have to see how they change the damage formula first. If they for example make vit our main source of damage then we won't even need strength anymore. They could be doing anything with that formula.

Yeah you're right this is all speculation thread of what's to come i've been playing my tank less lately but if that's the case with vit then i'd play my tank more especially with the materia melds coming in 3.2 and relic in 3.15.

Someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong:

1. Raid/tomestone gear will be meldable, not just crafted gear.
2. Pentamelding will still be possible, but you cannot overmeld with primary stats. i.e. you get 1 materia of STR or VIT etc. so any subsequent melds will have to be secondaries (crit, parry, acc, etc.)
3. Crafted gear will be stronger innately? I don't see the point in this if raid/tomestone accessories are going to be meldable. They were already fine for their ilvl.

So what this means and what I think is perplexing a lot of people is that they've essentially minimized the primary stat impact of melding, but overall they have made melding doubly necessary for gear optimization, and this will hold true for all jobs, not just tanks.

i.e. you get a full set of i230 gear or whatever it winds up being, but its still not BiS until you pentameld all of it. The only silver lining is that only 1/5 of those melds will need to be primary stats which really isn't that much of a consolation. It may be too early to say, but it certainly appears that this issue will hold true regardless of what they do with vit/str damage stat weighting for tanks.

It's all up in arms at the moment it is too early to say, regards to the primary stats and minimizing it does make playing your main class a lot more optimal. Trading stats for more desirable ones to me seems like a step in the right direction classes like bards for example can get more crit out of their gear that they normally wouldn't get out of their set. Depending on what they do with the meta making us use more vit in favor of str all really depends later down the road if it's still Str > all right now and hasn't changed in 3.2 it'll be str, crit and determination for tanks.

You summed up my thoughts in your post though it's honestly my opinion on melding right now.

This also needs to be taken into consideration. I wish they would have elaborated a bit more. If we're not going to alter the current meta (DPS checks that require tank contribution) then this could be an artificial road block for progression if they reduce our access to STR and VIT. Alternatively, if they were to change up our damage modifier and make it VIT instead of STR they'd have to contend with the overly bloated HP pools.

Left side gear is capped on STR and VIT, so you won't add any of either there.

STR accessories are capped for STR, VIT accessories are capped for VIT.

Tanky tank will be VIT accessories, with a STR materia. DPS tank will be STR accessories, with a VIT materia.
