After a discussion I had today, it seems housing is underutilized. To address this, I wanted to propose the following.
-Allow players to buy a personal housing plot (a la FFXI). This could be private or could allow people to be invited on to the property. The personal house has a set, fixed cost for entry per subscribed account to ensure the storage space is paid for. Increasing plot and house size could be expensive as needed.
-A free company can also purchase a plot of a certain size for their communal use. A free company or group of players could then purchase a ward. Their houses can move onto the ward and are accessible by everyone (and get some special perks).
This way, housing will still be a large personal gil sink while solving current supply problems. It should not need a large amount of additional programming, and I think it would help with long-term player retention.

As long as its just an interior and not an exterior with a surround that could work having a little moghouse like station. Something like the inn room with placed furniture but they would have to be limited or you are adding a lot more server backend and data.

They should just expand the Private Room feature and let everyone pay 300,000G for one at the Inn... There is potential for everyone on a server to own a Private Room currently, so it's not like there is some server issue stopping this... Just tie the Free Company Private Room with the Inn one if your Free Company has an Estate to prevent people having two Private Rooms (which I imagine could be a problem).
Then all they need to do is exactly what they've suggested they're doing, and provide services like the Chocobo Stable elsewhere in Eorzea, can do something similar for Gardening too I imagine, or the Workshop... Let a Free Company buy a Workshop in Revenant's Toll for example, and just tie it with the Free Company Estate if they have/obtain one... Then Housing isn't a case of haves and have nots, it's a case of everyone has access to this stuff, but owning a plot in the Housing Ward simply ties it all together in one place. -

I think having even a little offshoot room with the chocobo stable indoors like a porch area and garden too.
