I recently had a hard drive failure, and I know setti gs like HUD layout, Macros, hotbars, and gear sets are all stored locally.
My question is where? I've got the game installed on an HDD other than the dead one, but I know the game also puts stuff in My Games/Documents which WAS on the dead one.
They're stored in Documents\My Games\FINAL FANTASY XIV - A Realm Reborn
And specific settings by character are stored in subfolders under that which start FFXIV_CHR
So I'm afraid it that hard drive was the one that died then they went with it too.
Depending on what exactly went wrong with the HDD, as long as you can boot from a different drive with the 'dead' one hooked up you may still be able to access those files. I had something similar happen to me, though it was months of work that I needed to reclaim from the busted drive.
If you can't explore the broken drive simply by bootting from a functional drive instead, there are some programs that could help such as Recuva (I have not personally used that program -- the instance I was talking about was several years ago and I've forgotten what I used then, though it was a paid program and this is free).
I got a new HDD and am working on getting that all set up. I gave the dead one to a friend to try and recover data and he said he was able to get most of the User profile data back. So fingers crossed.
