Ishgard, Taxes & the Nearing of 3.1

Unsure of how tax-reductions for selling out of Ishgard has been handled on other servers since 3.0/EA, but I logged on this afternoon to find that we on Brynhildr are now paying 3% selling-tax for operating our retainers out of Ishgard (up til today, it was 0% & I was abusing that reduction since I got my first Dragonskin map as MNR since the week after 3.0 launched).

Not sure if every server has been handled differently in this fashion based on population vs. currency circulation or at the same rate, or if this is a sign of things to come (read: 3.1 dropping soon).

I don't ever recall it being 0% on my server, but I also haven't been checking the tax until about two months ago... I only sporadically check i and it always seems to be around 2-3%

At least on my server, Ishgard tax has not been at 0% for a while. It was at 0% maybe the first month, but it's been around 3% since then.

Well it seems earch world is being handled differently then in this regard - I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out this was some sort of tactic on the devs' part as a way of evaluating each server to determine their standing in regards to things like housing costs (they have stated that the server-groups are subject to change as based on the amount of gil floating about). I likewise wouldn't be surprised if Brynhildr (where a grade 5 cottage goes for 2m currently) gets bumped up to a mid-class server from low-class when they revise the list of server-economic groupings.

pretty sure they can just look at the database for a tally of everyone's gil instead of having to resort to using tax to determine it. lol

Actually, the marketboard system was most likely first implemented as to keep tabs on the frequency & amount of gil trading hands in addition to more blatantly being a small gil-sink measure to curb the volume of gil per server. Due to the 1-million gil per transfer limitation on face-to-face trades & in-game mail, the marketboard is a more widely-used system and therefore provides a more in-depth screenshot of a server's economic status at any given time because people are more likely use its higher convenience level than the tediousness of trading/mailing (especially in the game of big-name items).

it can be used as a metric for gil traffic, I agree. but, for the purpose of simply measuring the amount of gil on a server, they can just go to the database and have a tally there already.
