After The Spirits Within I don't think they're keen on doing movies any more. Though Advent Children seemed to do pretty well.
I seem to remember Final Fantasy Unlimited having pretty lukewarm reception as well? The anime industry is having a lot of problems right now so I don't think S-E is too keen on diving back into that market any time soon. But who knows.
I don't think they need to move back into passive mediums. They've always done their narratives pretty well within gaming, so artistically, they're not missing out, and it's hardly a profitable alternative to what they're currently doing with mmos and smartphones.
I'd rather we didn't suffer another decade of subpar products and questionable business decisions, just for them to right themselves. They're just getting back on their feet as it is.
Despite being a japanese company I have never seen them do anime of any of their video games. Nor have I seen them make a video game in anime style. I could be wrong though.
Unless it's a spinoff of one of the Final Fantasies, they're better off not doing any original FF anime if Final Fantasy Unlimited/ Spirits Within is an indicator.
It's a shame they don't go that route since their FF games are very popular and need fleshing out that anime shows can depict. FF7 Advent Children was pretty successful.
If Castlevania can get an anime adaptation, why not? They got a lot to work with really and if they REALLY wanna let go and have fun, just claim it as a Dissidia branch of Final Fantasy, free range of characters, place and times. I do hope they avoid another mistake like Spirits Within cus I found that boring to the point I honestly don't even remember what it was about haha.
Spirits Within wasn't bad, it just wasn't Final Fantasy. At best it was a decent film that could have used more polish and less trying to be part of the franchise. Anime has been kind of meh for a while with some gems here and there. The only Final Fantasy anime I ever saw was Legend of the Crystals. Woah-boy ; ; never got past the first tape. In some circles there existed a Dragon Quest anime of some form at some earlier mid point of the 90's (maybe). Given Square tried harder to be more than a game producer (with not that many original titles). Id like to see something in the future, if they can avoid repeating mistakes. Phantasy Star Online is rumored to have an anime in the works but. Apart from the Street fighter Alpha OVA's and recently watching most of Jojo. Most game based anime hasn't translated very well for some odd reason. (please don't mention .hack// , SAO rants will follow.) . Otherwise Advent Children was a very pleasant surprise.
Acually Ultimate series are better than Legend (almost finish watching it) but it's seems okay but WOULD love to see they do something like Log Horizon/SAO type
