Where and what do you think they spend those retainers ventures on?
Ventures sound to me like that notorious scrip system that some unscrupoulous companies used in the late 19th and early 20th century. Basically some companies paid there employees in what was called "scrips". This scrip currency was only usable in the company store. So basically it tied the employees to the company. Doesn't this sound like the exploitave relationship we have with our retainers?
I don't think it's exploitative; at least not deliberately, on our end. How fair the worth of a single Venture (the currency) is compared to gil AND knowledge of the hypothetical store would determine a great deal, but we have no way of knowing that. The theory a friend of mine had is that they're essentially tokens, in that you turn in your ventures at the end of a certain timeframe and how many you turn in determines the gil you earn. That "currency" is sort of a misnomer and it's more a proof of work done. It's a more optimistic take, and I'm not usually an optimist but I like it here.
