What's up with the targeting in this game?

It's kind of hard to see since PS4 screenshots can get a bit sloppy a long with my UI but:

See that spike? Because of that being on my screen, I was unable to target switch since the Aery Drake(which is dead at the time of the screen capture, but the issue existed when it was alive) was considered "out of sight" thanks to it. Does this exist with M&K? Also, this issue happened numerous of other times with different objects.

I generally think it has to do more with the cameras position and where your character is facing. Just like when something big is in front of you and you can't retarget it unless you move the camera down and back a little

The targeting in FFXIV, strangely, is based off of your camera and not your character. While mining, for example, you can be standing directly in front of a targeted node, but if your camera is facing away from the node you still won't be able to mine it because it is "out of sight" of the camera. I imagine in your case that little spike is a polygon or two from a wall that is right on top of your camera? In which case that wall is blocking everything on screen, rendering it all "out of sight".

The targeting in FFXIV has a few oddities beyond this too, I hope somewhere down the line the system gets an overhaul.

Even tab targeting will not work if the object is not in physical line of sight.

If it is an offensive spell, it'll get interrupted if you get hit hard enough, move or if target moves out of your frontal arc or out of LOS.

So many people don't realize this also applies to mobs with very few exceptions. I can't begin to count all the times I've seen people eat strong spells or debuffs they could have completely avoided simply by walking through or to the side of the caster. Sometimes mobs (usually bosses) will turn around and cast on you anyway, but in most cases the cast will just fail if you aren't in front of them when they finish.
