Look at your traits, it was some new thing that was added. Nymeia's Ward, or something like that.
What it does is, if your perception is high enough but the item you're attempting to get has no HQ version, what it does instead is occasionally offer a boost in yield, in lieu of HQs.
Additionally, some other oft-overlooked things that were added was that BTN/MIN now have mid-level abilities that will increase success rate and yield, but only for the single next gathering attempt (as opposed to an entire node) for a reduced GP cost, and can be combined with the entire-node abilities that do the same thing. (There are also new high level quested abilities that do the same thing for HQs, which are probably more known about.)

This trait is Fantastic!
Especially on Heavensward nodes where you can get +2 Additional Attempts. I usually use the ward associated with the crystal to add 2 additional yields, and if you're lucky you'll get the +8 for a total of 11 Shards a single hit!
With node bonuses and abilities you can reach 95% HQ on first hit... :3
Highest I got was +7 but it is nice when you get a bonus.

I've had +5 as my highest but I do love this new system and the aetherial reduction, has really made getting these items much less of a hassle.
I saw a +10 once.
