There actually wasn't even a concept of 'recipe' before that update, you stuck random items in different combinations in a bag and hit 'combine' until something worked (or it bugged out and you lost everything).

Actually, the crafting system is beginning to resemble a lot like 1999 EverQuest. Spend months gathering materials, click "combine", watch it all vanish without a clue as to where it went.
