Companies?
Hi all, first time poster here.
Also, first time mmo player too. Been playing for a couple days on the free trial now and im really enjoying the game. So what are companies? Like free companies and grand companies and such, i keep hearing these terms and would appreciate a quick lesson if possible.
Thanks in advance and i look forward to playing with you folks. :)

Grand companies are a city states army. You'll be joining one eventually but it didn't matter which you choose so ouch whichever you like.
Free companies are pretty much guilds in game lore their mercenary organizations.

As Derek Stated. Also as you progress through the story you will be made to choose one of the three Grand Companies or GC's as they are referred to in chat/forums.
FC's or free company's are guilds or groups of people who play together. You probably will receive FC invites randomly throughout your play through. Sometimes FC's even shout in areas that they are recruiting.

Thank you guys, makes a lot more sense now.

I'd like to add a bit of info there.
1) Grand Companies or GCs as the others already said will be part of the main storyline. They will require you to join one, but dont stress too much about it, they are basically all the same (differ only in gear you can purchase from them) and you'll be allowed to switch your GC later on. First switch will be free of charge, after that you'll have to pay.
2) Free Companies or FCs are player made communities of people who play together and socialize. I'd recommend joining one, as they can put up buffs, which all members benefit from, for example reduced teleport costs or increased experience. Additionally FCs can own a house together, which enables you to do a variety of stuff, like gardening, chocobo training and owning your own room there.
3) You didnt ask about this, but new players are often confused by: Linkshells or LSs. Those too are a group of players that share a common chatroom. Different from FCs, they are mainly intended for chatting with likeminded people (example LSs for hunting, LSs for running specific content with, LSs for Lalafells only,...) and you can have up to 8 of them (while you're limited to 1 FC only).
Hope I could help a bit :)
P.S.: Since you're still in your trial you might want to check out the friend invite (if you havent already done this). You can enter a code given from another player on Mog-Station and you'll recieve several useful and funny items, best for new players being stuff that will let you earn more experience and help with leveling up. Heres a code if you're interested: U9DJZ5DX

One of the level 20 Main Scenario quests will have you join a Grand Company (The Immortal Flames of Ul'dah, the Twin Adder of Gridania, or the Maelstrom of Limsa Lominsa). You won't be able to join a Free Company until you've bought the game though. It's one of the limitations of the Free Trial.

I decided to buy the game after all, but did so on PC rather than console so i'll have to delete this account. Just want to say thanks again for all the input here, great first impression of the community.

You can use your same account on pc as your console, unless you bought the game on Steam. In that case then you'll need to create a new user. Steam is very needy that way, it doesn't like to share with others.
