Crating with items that have materia in them.

I'm not sure if this has been asked before (and couldn't think of an easy way to search for it). My understanding is that in the new system we will be able to make base equipment then do a secondary synth to make it into a colored version of said item. Has it been asked/answered what happens when we have materia in said item Ex. will we lose the materia, will it exist in the new item, or can it simply not be crafted at all after being materia'd? (This can be seen in other things too like when you use a base main hand equip to make some advanced version of the same main hand equip)
