remind me on how data center works

i play on gilg which is in aether, does that mena i will never get matched with excalibur player in df?

Unfortunately, no. You will only play with other servers on the Aether data center. Excalibur and all other servers on Primal are not accessible.

You may of course, make a new character on Excalibur or transfer an existing character there.

How so?
When ARR was released, DF used to match anyone from any datacenter but it was changed around 2.1, I think, to ease the matching.
The only thing we lose is that people from JP servers will play together, as people from NA servers or people from EU servers. I'm not a WoW expert but I thought people were matched according to their server language in this game.

Well in WoW at least they have the EU servers in actual Europe.
It's a bit easy to transfer from data center when they are next to each here.

SE is working on the EU data center. They hope to have it by 3.1, but by the end of the year at the latest.
I agree that they should have made it right away, but after the flop that 1.0 was, I am not surprised they went with the safe approach.

And I highly doubt they will limit server transfer after that. AFAIK you are able to transfer to JP servers now anyways.

Sorry I have to disagree. Playing low pop servers in wow sucks but DF really was the start of the downfall for wow

You went from a close knit community, most with their own server forum to a massive horde of nobodies.

Just to expand on this a little, here's a list of all the data centres and what servers are part of those centres. You can use this to determine what servers you'll be matched with since you're on the Aether data centre.
