Question or two regarding Relic weapon and it's current state

Ok. So, fresh dinged to 50 (or well, almost fresh), I'm preparing my character (aka playing through msq) for Heavensward that I was thinking of buying soon.

But... I was thinking... I'm not sure, now that Heavensward is out, is getting relic weapon a necessary?

I read that most of MSQ and dungeons expect you to have it and that MSQ requires item level at least 90 or above, so... it's something you really can't just "skip", isn't it?

So should I start relic weapon quest and wait til I get it done before continuing MSQ?
I also heard you can just buy i100+ gear from Ishgard? Meaning basically there's no point for me to start gearing up besides what MSQ requires?

I'm really sorry if this sounds stupid, I'm just really confused about it and all the guides I found are for old patches and/or gearing guides.

At this point, you really don't need it. You'll get Tomestones of Poetics when you run level fifty dungeons, and you can use those to buy a suitable weapon in Mor Dhona, it should last you just fine until you reach Ishgard.

Relic now is really only good for glamor. Not worth the time unless you really, really want it.

Unfortunately it's outdated now. Do it if you want to do the quests or get items for glamour, but otherwise I'd say start off with buying an ilvl 115 weapon off the market boards (or get someone to buy you one from Ishgard) and go from there.

Not even sure I would bother running dungeons to gather tomes, unless you want to of course. You can buy ilvl 115 gear off the MB thats enough to get you through. I only made it to the Novus stage and those ilvl 115 are only one point lower in stats.

The only reason to do the relic and I'm not talking about the full quest - that's basically dead unless you want glamour - but just the first step is to get a title - this involves a crafted item, 2 materia, running 5 trials and one dungeon. It's easy enough and rather more enjoyable then the rest of it. You could upgrade it to 90 if really wanted easily as well until you get something better but the msq gives out gear rather generously from what I've seen.

It's probably not worth all the time-consuming upgrade steps, but the first couple stages (Relic and Zenith) are quick and easy. True, it's not exactly necessary, but you can get an i90 a lot faster than you could get anything with Tomes, then you have the tomes you get along the way to use for your i120 armour.
