Overheating problems.

Hello forum. I've been playing FF for a while now and I came into a little problem. I'm running a Windows XP service pack pro 32bit. Intel core 2 duo 2.0ghz processor. 2gb of ram a 600WT Corsair PS. Nvidia geforce 8800gt 512mb. (Sorry for how I put the specs I'm on my phone lol). So on to the question. I decided to tweak a bit and OC my video card a bit. I turned off AO and put all my settings on standard. I've been able to play the game pretty good tbh. Running over 40+ fps in towns and 60+ fps while hunting. I've had the game for a couple of months and played with everything on high. Playable but thought it was going to kill my system. Now I'm playing perfect but running Hw monitor in the background to check my gpu's temperature. Whenever I'm gaming I put my fan to up 100%, but even though my gpu reaches temperature of over 90c. So my question is. How long can I play the game without suffering on the long run or is it advised to play on like 2 hour intervals to avoid my gpu to being fried. Thanks :)

First thing i'd suggests id test w/o the OC'n it does it still run hot? Also compare the temps to the operating temps in the user manual if it's outside these you may have a issue playing for extended or even short periods, if you're using a destop pc you could also see if you can re-arrange your PCI cards so your GPU gets the best possible airflow, and clean any dust form the fans, i do this every few months.

i have notice compared to other games of the same quality of graphics, FFXIV hammers my ATI card but the temps are always within operating temps so it doesn't bother me too much.

You are really pushing that old card to hard(it's even the bare minimum of the system requirements for FFXIV), if you look at other heat related threads in this forum you will find that this game is not very optimized right now and really taxes even newer cards. As Okiura has said start with removing any OC settings you have made. Second do the standard check case/fans/card itself for dust, most 8800's are rated for 100c I've found, so 90c+(as you said it's going over 90) is getting pretty close to their threshold. If your financial situation permits it I'd look into updating that card as well, there is plenty of great cards in the $100-$130 range.

Without knowing your plans of an upgrade being possible and just running it into the ground in the meantime, I would actually advise not playing at this state, you will eventually run into artifacting then eventual death of the card.

Hey guys thanks for the quick response. I did everything. OC'd back to default. Cleaned the dust using an air pump and started playing. I played windows mode and reached a temperature of 85c. Still high, but way safer. I'll be posting results soon after playing on full screen.

EDIT: Ran the game on full screen. Max temperature registered was 85c. Do you guys think this is an appropiate temp to play the game? Max temp on my 8800gt is 105c.

85c isn't too bad tbh its's what i run at and your well within you operating temp if the max for your card is 105c, just don't OC it too much and you should be ok :)

Edit: and keep it clean clogg'd vents from dust is a pretty common cause for a over heating pc it's always good practice esp on a PC that's under alot of heavy load to clean it regularly.

I have played the game since beta on my gtx280. At 100% my card is 98-102c. nVidia cards are ok around that level in my experience. If I hit 105c I start artifacting. I'd say as long as you don't have visible artifacts, you are good, play until your heart is content.

At 98-102c you may not be looking at artifacting but you are still drastically shortening your GPU's life. And over time you will start to get artifacting at lower and lower temps.

105c is the max temperature for my nvidia so I don't want to risk it that high. I played yesterday for over 2 hours. max temp was 95c. Didn't crash, no artifacting nothing.
