Timeline of Coil?

When does the the Binding Coil of Bahamut (all of them) take place? I mean, this is going on when there are other huge story plots going on so I was wondering when this occurs. :)

I think the consensus is that things take place during the patch they came out during, so First coil being right after the 2.0 storyline ended, then Second coil after the 2.2 storyline, and Final coil being after the 2.4 storyline. At least that's how I think it is. Otherwise it could be some sort of fluid time.

Roughly parallel to MS, with BCoB starting immediately after 2.0 and the hard-mode primals, and ending before the move to the Rising Stones. FCoB probably ends before 2.5, because things.

MMOs typically have a time-fluid dynamic when it comes to parallel story lines (what they call a "time bubble" since they are immune to other events in the primary timeline). More or less, the only givens we have to work with are A) the expedition starts some time after the 7th Astral Era was announced, and B) the expedition ends some time before the death of Nanamo Ul Namo. As to where it fits exactly in this range, and how long the total quest takes, is unknown.

There is some liberty taken with MMOs in terms of time scaling though. For instance, there's no time passage happening between the events of 2.1 and 2.4 (in the minds of the world NPCs who still treat you like you're an outsider), yet we know that time has to have passed given the story and the subtle changes being made to the world (such as the growth of Revenant's Toll). Typically, game developers will use major patches and expansions to progress the timeline forward. For all intents and purposes though, 2.0 occurs year 5 of the 7th Umbral Era, and 2.1-2.5 all occurred in year 1 of the 7th Astral Era (as of now). Once 3.0 comes and we are given the date that it starts, we will finally have an idea about just how long of a time frame 2.1-2.5 happened at (and to a lesser extent, a rough idea how long the Coil expedition lasted).

I would consider them a little after the MSQ of 2.0, 2.2 and 2.4

I generally agree with the "where the story was at the time of the patch" sentiments, yet... I think they design it to not matter too much/make too many outside references where time matters. An MMO thing since players might run them at very different times.

Personally, I view all the side-stories as really taking place at some point immediately after the beginning of the new Astral Era. Somewhere right after the defeat of the Ultimate Weapon is about the only time we don't have particularly time sensitive, (story wise), missions that take place, (or possibly after dealing with the primals again, I can't remember how immediately that happened after Ultima). I don't see many of them besides the Class/Job quests taking place prior to The Ultimate Weapon either, as after a certain point we're having one problem right after another that we must attend to timeline wise. So I would think that most if not all of the sidestory quests take place within a extended period of time between a couple of the non-urgent MSQ missions, that allows our intrepid hero to take time to solve problems not related to the Scions for a change. I don't think that the timeframe is tied to the patch dates, as those are simply an "out of context" concept, particularly noticeable with the Hildebrand sidestory which is clearly continuous and takes place with only a few days between certain arcs that were release within completely different patches. Of course, this is just how I view it, and people are free to disagree.....
