Free apps get money somehow. Remember Flappy Bird? It was totally free but the guy made money out of it by the thousands.

This, basically. Depending on platforms and distributions, sometimes it's possible to kick off a claim (Eg if they tried to sell stuff on Steam, Square could easily get stuff pulled from Steam in regions they have a copyright claim in) - but oftentimes it's just not and there's really nothing they can do because chinese copyright is its own completely separate system that may or may not even exist.
