No, that is correct. A creature like that exists in mythology, it's just the fact that lions have always been so widespread and obviously native all over Japan, the appearance doesn't match what we call lions. :D But yeah. It's only confusing for us.
(Also: be glad the mount's not a giraffe. Though maybe that would be more interesting than "yet another horse".)
Looks like a lion to me.
