Why aren't my items selling? Editing retainer

As the question states, my items, particularly weapons and armor pieces, are rarely sold. What sells most often are the enemy parts (meat and such) and plants that I often sell for 4 or 16 gil. My weapons and armor are typically 200 to 400 gil, which doesn't seem that expensive and are usually on-par with what's sold in-game, if not cheaper. What can I do about this?

This is more like a rant than a question: why can't we make changes to our retainer's voices without recreating them? This is one thing about this game's character creation I can't stand: We can't reedit the models AT ALL without fantasia, not even to change the skin/eye color, voices, face, or other minor things. Yeah, we have the aesthetician for hair, facial features, and makeup, but that's it? If we wanted to change races, genders, or even clans, I could understand having a limitation, but I see no point in jumping through loops just to tweak the models we already have. :confused:

As far as your item sales are concerned...

Are your items the cheapest of that item on the market? If they're not, they almost definitely won't sell.

Are the items you're selling...actually in demand? Just because an item exists, has some use, and is cheap doesn't mean anyone will actually need it anytime soon. Some items only sell a few times per month. If you're trying to sell those, it's going to take a long time. Check the item's sale history.

Are you being undercut? It's possible to be undercut before every time the item sells, thus ensuring your item won't sell. It's coincidence, but it does happen fairly often.

Well, there's not much you *can* do. Stuff sells for what people are willing to pay; you can't go out and make them buy it. You have to sell what people want at what they're willing to pay. The NPC vendors are a poor indication of what stuff sells for on the market, usually. Better is to look at the market itself. The market interface lets you see what instances of the item are already up in "Compare Prices" and what's being asked for them; it also lets you see the last coupld of dozen sales in "Market History" in the Compare Prices window. Take note of not only what's been paid for the items, but how often they sell; the Market History includes the date of sale in its info. If NPCs are selling your stuff at 200 to 400 gil, then you're selling something like ilvl 10 to 15 equipment. There's not much of a market for such low-level equipment; people get a lot of it as quest rewards and they level out of needing it quickly anyways. I would suggest levelling your craft some and selling higher level equipment. Check the Market Histories of various item to try and find stuff that sells well. Special hint--HQ often is a big boost, since you can only get that from crafting.

Ah. LTW 13, BSM 6, CUL 2. Don't have really have the tools to consistently HQ yet. You're really going to need to do some levelling before you can expect to see much money from selling what you've made. HQ is really tough until 18 and you get Standard Touch (which makes the occassional HQ possible).

As was mentioned, check the sale history on the items to verify the price of the last selling item. Try to adjust the price accordingly. As for the retainer and your own appearance...it makes sense in a way. Retainers and such are "real" people in the game and from a lore/story stand point you really can't go around changing how you look. You also can't suddenly change your own voice neither.

Since you are selling your weapons for like only 200 to 400 gil, i'm assuming these are leveling weapons? (non level 50). If this is the case then I suggest you just soul bind them and then convert them into material, desynthesize them, or even sell them to the NPC. Most of the leveling weapons do not sell. People generally get weapons and gears from dungeons and/or the grand company. They will hardly buy any thing from the Auction House for leveling gear unless it has a rare / unique skin or something.

The only weapons/armors that actually sells are the relic quest weapons, some rare skin weapons/armor and some of the high ilevel stuff.

Like others have suggested, check the purchase history to see if the item actually sells.

The other thing to note is that those low-level weapons and armor aren't particularly challenging to make, even as a low-level crafter. And aside from leve turn ins there's typically much better gear out there for leveling. From what I've found, unless you're making the 'top tier, OMG how am I ever going to possible HQ this' gear, the gear itself never really sells well.

What -does- sell well, however, are the crafting materials (like you mentioned with the meat and plants). Though what sells better than those are the crafted crafting materials (ingots, leather, rivets, etc.). Most of that is due to the fact that people who are working on a single craft, like LTW for example, and don't have crafts like BSM, ARM or GSM will still need iron/steel/mythril ingots and such but aren't able to craft them themselves, so they turn to the MB.

I make most of my money at lvl 50 selling things like HQ Darksteel and Rose Gold nuggets, as well as HQ Hippogryph leather. Getting someone to pay the massive cost of those high-end gears as well can be difficult... most people don't want to drop a mil or two on a single piece of gear, but they're willing to drop a couple thousand on the materials to get them towards that gear.

I don't know about Gilgamesh or Faerie, but on Coeurl I rarely have trouble selling leveling weapons and gear, so long as I offer it at around the current going rate (or cheaper if the current rate is ridiculously high for the level). There may not be as many sales for a given item as there are for level 50 stuff, but neither are there as many competitors offering it, so overall most of it sells pretty well.

Of course, there are exceptions, when the market has been flooded with a particular item so now tons of them are being offered for virtually nothing, but that's relatively rare. It's also a good reason for crafters to avoid making lots of the same (finished) item to sell. You can sell lots of Hard Leather, but there are only so many people looking for Hard Leather Wristbands on any given day. If you want to make and sell finished goods, make a couple each of a wide variety of items. They'll sell better that way.
