I only have name plates display for people on my friends list and people I have targeted. It's too much clutter to have more name plates than that and helps me quickly pick out friends from among a crowd.
I also have it to where only my friends, party members, and people I target have name plates displayed. NPCs have theirs as well, but they're kind of helpful. It sounds kinda mean, or something like that, but I really don't care about the random people that I meet at a glance in the game world.
I usually keep name plates displayed, mainly so that I can tell the difference between players and NPCs. But if I'm in a really crowded area where the sea of blue names just covers too much of the screen, then I'll temporarily turn off names (well, set to only when targeted) for players not in my party.
Initials everywhere except for fc/party/fl
On a somewhat related note, I sure wish we could display names without having to display everyone's FC as well. Unless someone is in my own FC, I really couldn't care less what other FC they're a member of, and having it always displayed with everyone's name adds a lot of extra screen clutter.
I like to see everything. I like spying on people a lot (Examining their gear and stuff, sometimes looking up their search info) and I also enjoy seeing people's names. Don't see why not.
For party I have it set to First Name, Last Initial. I can see their whole name in the party list.
I have all PC names on but it is a ton of clutter at times >.< I wish I could turn off <FC> names and the AFK Icon. That would help a huge amount with out forcing me to turn off all names.
