I have just bought a private room in my FC's house and also some furniture from the MB. I cannot work out how to get those furnishings from my inventory to appear in my room. How do I do it?

I have just bought a private room in my FC's house and also some furniture from the MB. I cannot work out how to get those furnishings from my inventory to appear in my room. How do I do it?
In the social menu there is a selection called "housing" it brings up the option to change different room details such as description, interior features and furnishings.
